	Buddhist studies dept faces threat of closure
		The closure of the post-graduate department of Buddhist studies in Magadh University would be ironical, as the university headquarters is located near the seat of Buddha's enlightenment and nearly 500 foreign students from countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Japan etc have passed out of the department during the last one-and-a-half decade.
		According to Buddhist scholar and retired professor of the Magadh University, post-graduate department of Ancient Indian and Asian Studies, teaching in Buddhist studies in the university was started in the year 1984 by the then governor A R Kidwai and the then Sri Lankan high commissioner.
		If the Magadh University Buddhist studies department is finally closed, as are the indications emanating from the negative approach of the state government and the almost indifferent response of the University Grants Commission, only three centres of Buddhist studies will remain in the country.

	Rediff On The NeT: Bihar varsities exist in a time wrap
		Though the state's grant to universities has gone up from Rs 1.2 billion in 1985 to Rs 3 billion this year, considering the rise in expenditure this hike is inconsequential.
		While a section of teachers and politicians agree that the universities could easily double or triple their internal resource generation by increasing tuition and hostel fees, some teachers' and students' organisations are dead against any such move.
		Magadh University which has 42 colleges under its wings gets the highest grant of about Rs 50 crore annually, while Patna University which has six colleges attached to it gets around Rs 15 crore.

		The Punjab Government is contemplating high-level inquiry to probe authenticity of the degrees acquired from the university outside the state on the basis of which a number of beneficiaries got jobs, especially in the Police Department.
		Mr Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh was deputed to visit Magadh University, Bodh Gaya, to verify whether Mr Parmpal Singh passed BA Examination from the university in September 1991.
		From personal hearing of Parmpal Singh it is clarified that this is due to this reason that Parmpal Singh appeared in BA (I) of Panjab University, after passing BA from Magadh University he did not pursue his studies in Panjab University.

	There's one teacher for every student in Bihar!
		It was found that Magadh University had to collect Rs 28.19 crore as revenue from tuition fee, migration fee, examination fee and sale of forms.
		It was also found that several universities continued to pay salaries to teachers as well as non-teaching staff who had been elected or nominated to Parliament or state legislature as the matter was pending in court.
		The report also points out thatdespite the fact that the University Act states that the results of the examinations should be published in the official gazette within 60 days of the completion of the exam, there were delays every year ranging from at least two months to seven-and-a-half months.
