In 1898, the Magarey Medal was awarded to the fairest and most brilliant player for the first time (see #Magarey Medal).
The Magarey Medal is awarded to the fairest and most brilliant player in the SANFL each season and is the oldest of its type in Australia.
Magarey died in 1929, but his name lives on and the Magaery Medal is still awarded to the fairest and most brilliant SANFL player each season.

He won the Magarey Medal in 1935, a result of speed, brilliant high marking and long kicking, and is recognised as one of the first proponents of running on after taking a mark.
Three times runner up for the Magarey Medal, he won the honour himself in 1953 and 1957, and continues to win hearts with his personality and support of all things South Adelaide.
Runner up for the 1964 Magarey Medal, he tied with Barrie Robran in 1968, but was ineligible because he had received a one match suspension for telling an umpire what we all knew about him in any case.

For the new Magarey Medal, women biographers will be recognised for their scholarly achievement — as distinct from the original Magarey Medal, the oldest individual award in Australian football, won annually by the fairest and best footballer in the South Australian National Football League [2].
Dr Magarey, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Adelaide’s Discipline of History [3], is the first cousin four times removed of William Ashley Magarey, who founded the football medal as president of the South Australian Football League in 1898.
The new Magarey Medal will be awarded to a female writer who has published the work judged to be the best work of biography written on an Australian subject.

Despite only modest achievements at under age level, this youngster had managed to win the Magarey medal as the best player in South Australia in 1992 and the Norwich Rising Star award as the best youngster in the AFL when playing for the lowly Brisbane Bears in 1993.
The Brownlow Medal in 2003 was belated recognition in the eyes of many, but a richly deserved prize.
Although he would have preferred a different medal on the dias, he stands in exulted company as one of only 3 men to win such an award in a losing side.

Jim’s fairness and brilliance were finally recognised in 1953 when he won the Magarey, and then, in 1957, he tied with Ron Benton for the same honour but missed out on a medal on a countback.
He had previously been runner-up for the Magarey Medal in both 1981 (to Norwood’s Michael Aish) and 1982 (to Tony McGuiness), but in 1991 he finally won the medal in a remarkable season that saw him win a number of other awards as well.

The medal is awarded as follows: the field umpires in consultation after each game award six votes; three votes to the best player, two to the second best and one to the third best.
The 1998 Brownlow Medal was won for the second consecutive year by on-baller Robert Harvey of St. Kilda with 32 votes, which ties him for the highest total ever awarded.
The Magarey Medal for 1998 was won by Andrew Osborn of South Adelaide, with 16 votes.

Inaugurated in 2002, the Horrie Gorringe Medal was awarded annually to the best and fairest player in the Premier Division of Tasmania's Southern Football League for just 2 seasons, before being replaced by the William Leitch Medal.
Prior to that, the Larke Medal was bestowed on the best and fairest player in the Teal Cup under 17 interstate championships between 1976 and 1991, and on the best and fairest player in Division One of those championships between 1992 and 1995.
