Magatama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In modern Japan, the magatama's unique shape of a sphere with a flowing tail is still the usual visual representation of the human spirit.
It is believed to be a necklace composed of jade magatama stones instead of a solitary gem as depicted in popular culture.
It is thought that the original magatama was broken somehow and crafted into the jade necklace that is the current one, though there is no historical evidence that points to this.

Magatama (Japanese name; called Kokkok in Korean) are curved beads which first appear in Japan around the late Yayoi Period of Japan.
Magatama are believed to have come from the Asian continent through Korea, where they are known as kokkok.
The Korean kokkok are pretty much indistinguishable from their Japanese contemporaries, a fact which suggests that during this period Japan was closely engaged politically and economically with the Asian continent through the Korean Peninsula.

 NTSC-uk review > Xbox > Magatama
Magatama is an action game from Kawai Hiroshi, lead programmer of Final Fantasy VII and IX, in itself enough to make some people sit up and take notice.
Compounding the uninspired combat is the ungainly movement of the protagonist himself; although he has back-flip and side-somersault commands, Shinato’s clumsy movement and near-useless air attack render him perhaps the least athletic ninja in history.
Magatama is a brave attempt to capture a piece of the action game market, yet, in trying to breach a tantalising gap, it ends up as less than the sum of its parts.

Officially unveiled in gobbledegook just this morning, details of Magatama have been bandied around the specialist press for a while - it's a 3D action title that MS Game Studios is developing specially for Japan, which draws inspiration from the likes of Onimusha and presents itself in real-time 3D with a strong emphasis on combat.
Speaking of which - Gamers.com reports that the name "Magatama" is a Japanese term for a jewel shaped like a comma; specifically in this case it refers to one third of the Imperial Regalia.
Anyway, Magatama is due out in Japan this year (November 20th by the look of the press release, which also confirms Dolby Digital 5.1 support) and as it's meant specifically for the Japanese, a US or European release is by no means definite.

Living in postwar Japan. Hans Brinckmann's acclaimed autobiography 'The Magatama Doodle'.
The Magatama Doodle chronicles the author’s experiences of 24 years’ residence and work in Japan (1950-1974) and comments extensively on the country’s social, economic, political and cultural realities of that period.
The doodles reminded him of magatama, ancient comma-shaped precious stones found in prehistoric tombs.
They seemed an appropriate symbol for one of the book’s underlying themes: that a deeply conservative ethos lies at the root of both Japan’s distinctive and much-admired culture and the undeniable rigidity of its political, educational and managerial structures.
