Circulation is increasing, yes, but not as much as I'd like.
A competition led magazine is probably more likely to have folk submitting for the money on offer without bothering to subscribe as they're going to end up with a free issue anyway - and shame on such people, how do they think magazines like DT can keep going?
On the other hand a submission based magazine could well be bombarded by entries - because authors want to see their stuff in print - but possibly of an inferior standard, potentially leading to the mag folding because over time it's quality deteriorates.
