Lupescu is the Romanian equivalent of the German or Yiddish surname Wolff.
Elena Lupescu was the daughter of Nicolas Grünberg, a Jewish pharmacist in Iaşi who adopted the name Nicolas Wolff and later Nicolas Lupescuroyalsportal.de for his names; Easterman 1942, p.75 for his profession., and his wife, née Elizei Falkroyalsportal.de of whom little is known.
Elena Lupescu was educated from early childhood to maturity at the royally-sponsored, German-oriented Couvent Diaconesele, one of the three most prestigious Catholic girls' schools in Bucharest at the time, along with the French convents of Notre Dame and Sacré Cœur.

Forced under first Soviet and subsequently Hungarian pressure to surrender parts of his kingdom to foreign rule, he was outmanoevred at last by the pro-German admninistration of Marshal Ion Antonescu, and abdicated in favour of Michael, settling ultimately in Portugal.
He and Magda Lupescu were married in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 3, 1947, whereupon she was known as Princess Elena von Hohenzollern.

Michael was born in Sinaia, Romania, the son of then Crown Prince Carol and Princess Helen (a niece of King Paul of Greece) and grandson of King Ferdinand I.
When Carol eloped with his Jewish mistress Magda Lupescu and renounced his rights to the throne in December 1925, Michael was pronounced heir apparent, and he succeeded to the throne on Ferdinand's death in July 1927.
