Mage: The Ascension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seeing their chance, mages who believed in proto-scientific theories banded together under the banner of the Order of Reason, declaring their aim was to create a safe world with Man as its ruler.
In the game, Mages have always existed, though there are legends of the Pure Ones who were shards of the original, divine One.
Like other storytelling games Mage emphasizes that players have more freedom in comparison with many other role-playing games, in that the game's powers and traits should be used to tell a satisfying story.

Amazon.com: Mage: The Ascension (Revised Edition): Books: White Wolf Publishing
Mages have been cut off from their friends and places of power in the spirit worlds, and are now forced to do what they had been avoiding for so long: dealing with the rest of the world on a regular basis.
In this new and improved system Mages (those who can work magic) are more restricted by the beliefs of humanity, less able to interact with powerful Mages who are exiled from Earth and more able to create a world of their own.
Mage Revised wasn't a bad purchase for me because I had all of the supplements that adequately filled in all of the omitted information.

 SYMBIOSIS.COM: MAGE
I received good reports from others who have seen her character sheet, so I have included it here to serve as an example of what you should be aiming to create in a Mage: The Ascension character.
At the same time, this is the most interesting and satisfying part of creating a character for Mage, while being one of the most intimidating and confusing for new players.
Like the Verbena, I found the Paradigm of the New World Order to be a wishy-washy mish-mash that lacked self-consistency or fundamental "coolness." Like "Passion in Darkness," "Agents of Control" is an attempt to bring together the disparate parts into something workable and interesting.

The Mages are the few amongst us who realise that we still have the power to define our world as we wish, we don't have to accept what everyone else gives us.

After the ascension of Imhotep, the mage was himself worshiped as the son of Ptah and became the patron of scribes and doctors.
Many mages believe that what made Egypt unique was the closeness between the inhabiants and the gods; this explains the sometimes confusing mixtures between different gods and myths, since most umbrood have a very tenuous individuality and change appearance and properties depending on the viewer and his beliefs.
Several fractions of mages used the unrest to further their ends, including the Cult of Nun who in 47 BC used the Mob to burn part of the Library of Alexandria during Caesar's war.

The Big List O' Paradox Flaws
In my Mage: the Ascension game, it seemed to make sense to link Paradox Flaws to whatever Sphere the mage got the Paradox with; for example, it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense to hit up a mage with some kind of magickal virus when he's been tossing Forces magick about.
The mage is inadvertently thrown into the future one day for every point of Paradox that she expels; really large backlashes may increase the distance to a week for every point, a month, or perhaps even a year.
The mage is abruptly in the last place on Earth, or in the appropriate Realm, that she wants to be, usually one with a lot of Sleepers standing around.

Spiral Nature - Magick - Chaos Magick - RPG Magick 101
interestingly, one could use Mage as a meta-paradigm withing a chaos paradigm, and following suit, the chaos magick would again become the paradigm used by the mage in his "Mage the Ascension" persona...meaning that you can adopt YET ANOTHER paradigm withing that purview.
This was also the game that had another (real-life) mage playing as a fellow player (not GM, dammit).
I think that understanding Reality's rules (however you choose to see them) is required before being able to "sidestep" them, as chaos mages are wont to do.

 Ex Libris Nocturnis -
It is, however, what we DO NOT know about the Nephandi and whom they serve that tends to illicit anxiety and a sense of unknown, arcane horror in the players of our Mage: The Ascension Chronicles.
Nephandi are the true public enemy number one in the Mage: The Ascension setting.
We know that the Nephandi have demonic ties of some form or another, but whether the demons that Nephandi are in commerce with are from our universal interpretation of Hell or eldrich remnants from a Hell of a long dead pantheon of gods remains a mystery.

This is my favorite thing about chaos magic: The Mage: The Ascension roleplaying game has a series of books about the mage factions in the game world.
The Sons of Ether are more or less the 'mad scientists' of the Mage world (usually associated with 1930s pulp sensibilities).
An example is that of a typical Western doctor, and a Son of Ether, both examining acupuncture as a medical technique.

Technocracy (World of Darkness) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Mage: The Ascension, the Technocratic Union (or Technocracy) is a world-wide conspiracy that employs a scientific paradigm to pursue an agenda opposed to superstition and faith-based belief systems and dedicated to the victory of science as the primary world belief system.
White Wolf Game Studios describes this history in detail in its historical setting for Mage, entitled Mage: The Sorcerer's Crusade.
A central aspect of the Technocracy's mission is to define the rules by which reality operates, and their definitions (as a matter of principle) abhors the idea of consensual reality.
