 ninemsn Encarta - Multimedia - Supernova 1987A
The most prominent supernova to be visible from Earth since the invention of the telescope, Supernova 1987A appeared in the Large Magellanic Cloud in 1987, and astronomers have tracked the development of the explosion ever since.
In February 1998 the Hubble Space Telescope took these images, showing the beginning of a brightening on the inside of one of the rings of gas that had been blown off the star before the supernova.
The brightening is the first sign that the blast wave from the explosion is finally catching up with the previously ejected gas, heating it to high temperature and causing it to emit strongly in X-ray wavelengths.

The form of the Premium fit into the views of the Society's founder and then president, Benjamin Franklin, who viewed the awarding of medals and prizes as an appropriate custom for the new democratic Republic.
Magellan wrote that all he required was the reply of the Society, and he would send the 200 guineas by way of his friend Samuel Vaughan (APS member 1784).
Benjamin Franklin personally wrote Magellan on January 24, 1786 to "thankfully accept" the offer, and inform him that a committee had already been formed to establish rules for the award in accordance with his intentions.

Something is keeping the structure and magnetic field of this galaxy (the Large Magellanic Cloud) strong and ordered, even while the Milky Way's gravity works to tear them apart.
At just 160,000 light-years away the Large Magellanic Cloud, or LMC, is the Milky Way's closest neighbour and is being clawed apart by the Milky Way's gravity.
Astronomers usually map the magnetic field of a galaxy by observing the polarised optical or radio emission from the galaxy itself.

A dwarf galaxy is a small galaxy composed of up to several billion stars, a small number compared to our own Milky Way's 200-400 billion stars.
The Large Magellanic Cloud, containing over 30 billion stars, is sometimes classified as a dwarf galaxy.
There are many dwarf galaxies in the Local Group: these small galaxies frequently orbit around larger galaxies, such as the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Triangulum Galaxy.

The local group includes the Andromeda Galaxy, which is similar to the Milky Way, and the Magellanic Clouds, which are satellite galaxies of the Milky Way.
The vast majority of observed galaxies are classified as either spiral or elliptical (football-shaped), with a small minority, e.g., the Magellanic Clouds, classified as irregular according to a scheme originated by Hubble.
Although estimates of the age of the universe are controversial (see Hubble's law), if it is taken as 15 billion years, then it is estimated that the first galaxies were formed 12.8-13.5 billion years ago.
