Maggie Cheung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maggie Cheung Man-yuk (張曼玉; pinyin: Zhāng Mànyù; Cantonese: dzoeng1 maan6 juk9/juk2) (born September 20, 1964) is a multi award-winning actress from Hong Kong.
Cheung spent part of her childhood and adolescence in the United Kingdom.
Upon her return to Hong Kong, Cheung ran and won second place in the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant contest in 1983 at the age of 19, and was a semi-finalist in the Miss World pageant the same year.

Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk, best known to Western audiences for her role as Jackie Chan's ever-suffering girlfriend May in the popular Police Story series, was born in Hong Kong in 1964.
Cheung did not forget where she got her start though, and in 1992 she returned to working with Jackie Chan in Police Story 3: Supercop, where she once again reprised the role of May, this time being upstaged not by Chan, but by Michelle Yeoh.
Cheung got a little "revenge" in the sci-fi martial arts smash hit Heroic Trio (1992) and its' sequel Excecutioners (1993), where she proved she could be more than just a punching bag in an action movie, impressing both critics and audiences with her martial arts skills as she stood toe-to-toe with Yeoh.

Specular Failure and Spectral Returns: Maggie Cheung
In both cases, Maggie Cheung appears in the contemporary "present," attempting to recreate a series of films from the early decades of the century.
For instance, Cheung's modest demurral at the opening of the film resonates ironically throughout the film, as her own virtuoso performance partially gives lie to her suggestion that she would not be able to live up to Ruan's legendary precedent.
Like Pierre Menard, Maggie Cheung seeks to immerse herself directly into the historical context of the films she is charged with recreating, but in the end she succeeds only in producing a surface recreation of the target films.

Why isn't Maggie Cheung a Hollywood star?
Cheung, accustomed to such crowds, is also accustomed to having people materialize to help her through them, and a young Canadian woman working in public affairs for the festival took Cheung's arm uncertainly.
Cheung's English, though accented, is fluent; her beauty, universal; her talent, unarguable -- the imprimatur of Cannes confirmed the cross-cultural appeal her Chinese fans have appreciated for decades.
The character, which Assayas, now her ex-husband, wrote specifically for Cheung, happens to be Chinese, but that's a minor aspect of her character, not the pivotal point of the plot: it's not a film about immigration or interracial relationships or cultural misunderstanding.

 Maggie Cheung @ Filmbug
A turning point in Maggie Cheung's career came in 1988 when she was cast in Wong Kar-Wai's 'As Tears Go By' with Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung.
In 1996, Cheung caught the attention of the acclaimed French director, Olivier Assayas, who cast her as his reincarnation of the super-criminaline of Feuillade's silent serial Les Vampires.
Cheung is a five-time Best Actress winner of Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Awards for her performances in 'Full Moon in New York' (1989), 'Red Dust' (1990), 'Actress' (1992), 'Comrades: Almost a Love Story' (1996) and 'In the Mood for Love' (2000).

indieWIRE: Acting 101: Maggie Cheung on "2046," "In The Mood For Love," and "Clean"
Cheung's latest film "Clean," directed by Olivier Assayas, in which she plays a recovering junkie, earned the international star the 2004 best actress award at Cannes and her most recent film, "2046" directed by Wong Kar Wai, which opened over the weekend, is one of the most anticipated auteur films to be released in 2005.
Cheung was told by "Center Stage" director Stanley Kwan to watch Ruan's surviving films to nail the legendary actress' movements.
Completing the film was slow and sometimes overwhelming, with her filming of "2046" taking place simultaneously, but once the projects had wrapped and "Clean" began shooting, Cheung was certain she had reached a "new level of acting" that is an "accumulation of knowledge" from all 80 of her films.

 Box Office Prophets: Maggie Cheung
Though it was the films with Chan that would bring Cheung to wider public consciousness, early on the actress realized that she would need to stretch beyond her hapless girlfriend character to leave a more distinct mark on the screens of Hong Kong and elsewhere.
Cheung’s inimitable style of acting is in no way overt or heavily mannered; her most powerful scenes tend to be carried off with a subtlety so restrained as to be almost unnoticeable.
Cheung’s face is so expressive that the slightest tilt of an eyebrow or the simplest flicker of an eye can convey waves of meaning about her characters.

 Cult Sirens: Maggie Cheung
It's on September 20, 1964, that Cheung Man-yuk was born in Hong Kong.
Too often, Maggie has been called a star of HK action movies, a title that makes her smile, as she freely admits that the majority of the stunts are all done by professionals, putting their own lives at risk.
All in all, we must conclude that Maggie became soon comfortable in France, as she dated and eventually married her IRMA VEP director, Olivier Assayas, in December 1998.

For those of us who have been enamored of Maggie since her earliest days as a dewy-eyed ingénue, her arrival as an artist of international renown is less a surprise than a confirmation.
Cheung had appeared in several of Wong Kar Wai's early works, including his 1988 directorial debut, "As Tears Go By." She knew him to be notoriously and completely incapable of adhering to shooting schedules.
Cheung's turn in "Clean" is a marvel; it is the gravitational core of a film that frequently threatens to fly apart at the seams of language, geography and subculture.
