A petite brunette, McNamara was part of the 1950s vogue for slender gamines (Audrey Hepburn, Leslie Caron, Shirley MacLaine) which stood at the opposite extreme from the equally popular voluptuous sex goddesses (Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Jayne Mansfield).
A teenage fashion model, McNamara studied dance and drama for three years before making it onto Broadway in 1951; the style of the dutiful neophyte would never leave her.
Signed by Fox, McNamara consolidated her status in another huge hit, "Three Coins in the Fountain" (1954), though she received much less attention amid an all-star cast and especially the postcard-pretty Italian settings.

William Holden and the virgin Maggie McNamara meet atop the Empire State Building, later joining middle-aged roue David Niven for martinis and steaks in Holden's hep bachelor bad.
Afterwards she went on to star in the boring, "Three Coins in the Fountain" and the cheesy "Cardinal." Her stint in Hollywood was then done and she worked as a secretary for the rest of her life.
David Niven's career at the time this film was made was in serious jeopardy; he had a contract break-up with the legendary Samuel Goldwyn which was anything but cordial and his pictures prior to this weren't much of any consequence (a good example is a silly, inane "comedy" entitled THE LADY SAYS NO, 1951).

Before the film is over, McGuire has won over her icy employer Clifton Webb; Peters has tamed roving-eyed Rossano Brazzi; and McNamara finds happiness with prince Louis Jourdan.
