The Valley was named after Maggie Mea Setzer Pylant on May 10, 1904.
Since it was her father John Sidney Setzer who wrote the United States postal service asking for permission to build a post office in their area.
Setzer died in 1979 at age 88 but to honor her the town of Maggie Valley has two women who take turns walking around in the period costume of Maggie Setzer.
