The Magherafelt Area Plan 2015 is a development plan being prepared under the provisions of Part III of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 by the Planning Service, an Agency within the Department of the Environment.
Notice was given to Magherafelt District Council on 21st January 2000 that the Department intended to prepare a new development plan for the District for the period 2000 to 2015.
In March 2000 the Department informed Magherafelt District Council that the Plan would be prepared under new procedures which replaced the Preliminary Proposals stage with the publication of an Issues Paper.

Today, we especially remember two elected members of Magherafelt District Council, councillors John Davey and Bernard O'Hagan, who were murdered as a result of this policy, which ensured a most vicious onslaught against republicans and nationalists across south Derry and north Antrim in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Each year Magherafelt District Council generates approximately 22,000 tonnes of municipal waste (that's waste collected by the Council).
However, in the past few years Magherafelt District Council have shown themselves to be at the very forefront of waste management in Northern Ireland by introducing a raft of new recycling services and initiatives aimed at reducing the waste that we send to landfill and protecting our precious natural resources.
