MAGHULL, a township-chapelry in Halsall parish, Lancashire; on the Leeds and Liverpool canal, and on the Liverpool and Ormskirk railway, 5 miles SSW of Ormskirk.
In 1835 Maghull was a township in the parish of Halsall.
For probate purposes prior to 1858, Maghull was in the Archdeaconry of Chester, in the Diocese of Chester.

 Maghull History
These names have varied over the years, but it is thought that the name Maghull may have been derived from the Celtic word 'magos', the old Irish 'Magh' and the old English 'halh', meaning 'flat land in a bend of the river'.
The presence of the American soldiers in uniform caused great interest and it is said that the police sometimes found it necessary to close Maghull railway station to control the flow of 'young ladies' from Liverpool.
Maghull's rail station opened in 1849, the Lydiate station opened in 1884 (but closed in 1952).

The Maghull National School was erected in 1839 and was invested in seven Trustees, of whom the Rector of Halsall, the Rev. R.
The funds for the erection of the School and the Master's House were obtained partly by voluntary donations, and partly by grants from the National Society, and from the Committee of Council on Education.
The Maghull School, having been erected by these and other means, was entrusted to seven trustees, and by unanimous resolution it was placed under the superintendence and direction of the Rev. Geo.

Maghull were proudly one of the founder members of the North West Counties League, with whom they recently ended a 17 year association in 1998, joining the West Cheshire fold in 1999.
Following a fire in 1991, which destroyed their dressing rooms and Clubhouse, Maghull erected a new building, which now houses fine dressing rooms and a comfortable Lounge Bar.
