  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Magi
Still the religious influence of this priestly caste continued throughout the rule of the Achaemenian dynasty in Persia (Ctesias, "Persica", X-XV); and is not unlikely that at the time of the birth of Christ it was still flourishing under the Parthian dominion.
The religion of the Magi was fundamentally that of Zoroaster and forbade sorcery; their astrology and skill in interpreting dreams were occasions of their finding Christ.
Magian astrology postulated a heavenly counterpart to complement man's earthly self and make up the complete human personality.

 S. H. Taqizadeh: Old Iranian Calendars
There is also an older reference to the Persian year in a short notice by Quintus Curtius Rufus, a historian of the first century AD and biographer of Alexander the Great, from which it may be inferred that the Persian year in his time did not differ from the Zoroastrian year of later centuries.
It was on the 10th day of this month in the year 522 BC that (according to the Behistun inscription, i, 55) the Magian usurper Gaumata was killed by Darius and his associates, and his illegitimate rule was overthrown.
If we take into consideration the fact that the Persian, of the fifth century BC did not obtain in their astronomical calculation the same exact result which we have today, the possibility of their error of one day would be easily conceivable.

Wise men (WebBible Encyclopedia) - ChristianAnswers.Net
In Matthew 2, it is recorded that they came from the East to Jerusalem looking for "he that is born King of the Jews." These were magi, a priestly caste of learned men.
The only known Magian priests East of Palestine (at the time of Christ's birth), were in ancient Media, Persia, Assyria, and Babylonia.
There is no proof of what country these men came from, and there is no consensus among the early Church Fathers.

The Key to Theosophy- by H.P.Blavatsky
As the author of The Eclectic Philosophy very pertinently remarks:
The Buddhist, Vedantic, and Magian systems were expounded along with the philosophies of Greece at that period.
It was not wonderful that thoughtful men supposed that the strife of words ought to cease, and considered it possible to extract one harmonious system from these various teachings … Panaetius, Athenagoras, and Clement were thoroughly instructed in Platonic philosophy, and comprehended its essential unity with the Oriental systems.
