The magician "puts his assistant into a trance" and then floats her up and into the air, passing a ring around her body to show that there are 'no wires' supporting her.
Magicians today seldom resort to hiding things up their sleeves, which has become a cliche, although this technique can still be used on occasion.
The magician pulls a rabbit from an empty hat; a fan of cards from 'thin air'; a shower of coins from an empty bucket; or they may, on an empty stage, appear in a puff of smoke -- all of these effects are productions, the magician produces "something from nothing".

Magicians talk about the "delicacy" of the illusion: a bit of light escaping from what is supposed to be a dark box or the errant corner of the assistants dress protruding from the trap door destroys forever all hopes of maintaining the illusion.
Magicians live in both the world of their mechanical tricks and the illusory world they are creating for their spectators, but they "believe" in the spectator’s world: "All of the most successful showman-conjurers agree that you must believe in your own magic; you cannot hope to convince an audience unless you first convince yourself."–Nelms.
Magicians must be competent at the mechanics of their craft, yet such competency does not make someone a magician, any more than knowledge of a rapid-prototyping system makes someone a software designer.

 Ann Patchett: The Magician's Assistant
Sabine has worked most of her life as a magician's assistant, hopelessly in love with her partner Parsifal even after she realises that he is gay.
(Mind you, they have also put Michael Connelly's Void Moon in the science fiction section, for even less reason.) The novel is described as being about Sabine's discovery of powers of actual magic - which might make for an intriguing fantasy novel - and this simply is not what The Magician's Assistant is about.
This, then, is a novel of discovery, but not the self-discovery which is so common a literary theme (though as Sabine gets to know her ex-husband's real family, she learns some surprising things about herself too).

The original method of this trick was exposed by the Masked Magician, Valentino, as part of Fox TV series called Breaking the Magician's Code: Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed.
