 b l u e j a c k : reviews : Raymond Feist -- Magician: Master
Feist is preaching to the choir, here: writing so firmly within the epic fantasy formula that the widely read will have a hard time finding some other classic or contemporary fantasy writer he does not make use of.
And it is my opinion that the typical fantasy reader is not asking for the genre to be stretched; is not looking for ground to be broken; does not require astonishing creative accomplishments: he or she wants to be entertained.
This is the Author's Preferred Edition, and sequel to Magician: Apprentice, the two originally published as a single massive novel.

The Book Forum - Magician By Raymond E. Feist
Magician was ok, but pretty standardised fantasy, while the books he wrote with Wurts seemed a bit more intelligent.
I loved the Magician books, even if the sequels disapoint slightly it is easily one of the greatest fantasy series written.
Pug was the best magician, thomas was the best warrior, Jimmy (?) was the best thief etc and sometimes i felt Feist spent more time describing what type of sword the characters used than on the character himself.

 Who is Raymond E. Feist?
In 1982, with the publication of his debut novel, Magician, Feist took the fantasy world by storm.
His historical novels include the Serpentwar and Riftwar sagas, the Empire Trilogy, Prince of the Blood, The King's Buccaneer, Faerie Tale, a dark-fantasy set in America, and three new series, the The Riftwar Legacy, Legends of the Riftwar, and The Conlave of Shadows.
His first novel, Magician, has over one million books in print, and his Rage of a Demon King was an international bestseller landing many bestseller lists since its release in April 1997.

Dabel Brothers Forums - Feist's "Magician: Apprentice" Adaptation.
Chris you will love Magician if you like Epic Fantasy with lots of big battles, over 2 massive worlds including lots of cool magic and even better characters who the author makes you care about.
I think Magician was the first non Tolkien epic fantasy I ever read.
Magician starts out focusing mostly on the characters and development, so I'm not sure how easily it would be to adapt into an exciting comic, but I'm sure this will be done well.

Book Reviews - Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist
I have read the Magician, Silver Thorn, A darkness in Sethonoe and prince of the blood. His books are incredible, they give you another life of magic and mysteries to escape to when ever you choose to read the book.
With intresting characters and a storyline that leaves any Tolkein novel for dead this series is a must for any fantasy lover.
Personally, Silverthorn is my favorite of the Riftwar series, but overall, every book by Feist is an inspiring tale, an epic fantasy.

 Amazon.co.uk: Magician (Riftwar Saga): Books
If you love Fantasy, you'll LOVE 'Magician' and to add one more cliché into the mix...it's magic!
Feist's two sequels to Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon complete the richly conceived Riftwar Saga, and Feist has gone on to chronicle other aspects of his invented worlds.
I recently finished Magician which I had picked up because of the BBC's Big Read last year.

sffworld.com - Does High Brow Fantasy Exist...
Fantasy would be something like Feists Magician where there is world building but the plot is still mainly all action or intrigue.
It's all fantasy, sure, but you'd have to be joking to say that there isn't a distinct difference in literary quality between Mervyn Peake and David Eddings (or Gene Wolfe and David Farland or E.R. Eddison and Robert Jordan).
Light fantasy being something like a Gemmell or Brust book where the story is kinda like an adventure novel.

March 3rd, 2002 08:56 PM i think epic is a term that gets thrown around too much and i am very much aware that not all fantasy is epic, but most current, bookshelf stuff is.
March 3rd, 2002 08:21 PM yes, it is true, that most fantasy is epic.
...you will find that most fantasy is epic, in fact it is probably one of the words you'll find somewhere on every blurb of fantasy books.

 Ann Patchett: The Magician's Assistant
(Mind you, they have also put Michael Connelly's Void Moon in the science fiction section, for even less reason.) The novel is described as being about Sabine's discovery of powers of actual magic - which might make for an intriguing fantasy novel - and this simply is not what The Magician's Assistant is about.
Sabine has worked most of her life as a magician's assistant, hopelessly in love with her partner Parsifal even after she realises that he is gay.
This, then, is a novel of discovery, but not the self-discovery which is so common a literary theme (though as Sabine gets to know her ex-husband's real family, she learns some surprising things about herself too).

 Amazon.com: Books: Mairelon the Magician
Recently brought back into print by Starscape books, "Mairelon the Magician" is a delightful Regency period fantasy by the author of the famous "Forest Chronicles." Though this book has a radically different setting and a very different manner, Wrede's style is quite recognizable.
"Mairelon the Magician" is an amusing comedy of manners--more dialogue than magic, and you have to memorize long lists of characters who keep showing up at the most inconvenient moments, such as in the midst of a burglary or an attempted elopement.

 Wizard - One Language
In most cases there is little to differentiate a wizard from similar fictional and folkloric practitioners of magic such as an enchanter, a magician, a sorcerer, or a thaumaturgist ; however specific fantasy authors and role-playing games use the names with narrower meanings.
When such distinctions are made, sorcerers are more often evil, "black magicians" (i.e., practitioners of black magic), and there may be variations on level and type of power associated with each name.

The two most prominent characters in Magician are two childhood friends, Pug and Thomas, who dream of one day being a great magician and warrior, respectively.

MMI Movie Review: Melies The Magician
For someone who was transported to fantasy land the first time she saw "Trip To The Moon" in a film class, the artistic choice of talking OVER Melies seems severely flawed at best and vandalistic at worst.
Art Video and Facets Video hope to redress that neglect with the DVD "Melies The Magician" including "The Magic of Melies", a documentary film by Jacques Meny, plus "Melies' Magic Show", 15 short films made by the great Melies himself between 1898 and 1909.
"Melies The Magician" is clearly a labor of love that every true Melies admirer will want to own, but a few artistic decisions were made that bugged this particular reviewer.
