The term magician can refer to a practitioner of either paranormal magic or illusionism.

 About James Randi
James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but today he is best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.
Randi has pursued "psychic" spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of faith healers, investigated homeopathic water "with a memory," and generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool over the public's eyes in the name of the supernatural.
His lectures and television appearances have delighted — and vexed — audiences around the world.

 Web site review 2
James Randi is a former magician and escape artist who has made a new career of debunking the claims of psychics, faith healers, and other purveyors of the paranormal.
It may be that this is really "James Randi Incorporated" masquerading as a non-profit organization, but the work of debunking fraudulent claims of paranormal powers is at least entertaining if not important for the well-being of society, so Randi is entitled to his revenue.
Also, the Foundation publishes research into paranormal claims in an electronic newsletter and "other periodicals." And, finally "the Foundation offers a $1,000,000 prize to any person or persons who can demonstrate any psychic, supernatural or paranormal ability of any kind under mutually agreed upon scientific conditions" (ibid.).

James Randi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Randi's supporters note that there are other organizations of skeptics that have similar standing offers to prove the existence of paranormal abilities, and anyone claiming to be an expert in their field of the paranormal can apply for any of these other prizes, avoiding Randi altogether.
The magician responded, "Ah, young man, you're a magician yourself, aren't you?", much to Randi's amazement.
Randi could not participate in the trial, did not recognize the court's authority (since "insult", as opposed to "libel", is not a legally cognizable basis for a civil action in the U.S.), and refused to pay the $2,000 judgement that was awarded.

Randall James Hamilton Zwinge (born August 7, 1928), more often known as James ("The Amazing") Randi is a stage magician, skeptic, and opponent of pseudoscience.
He is perhaps most famous for the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge, in which the James Randi Educational Foundation will award a prize of one million dollars to anyone who is able to show evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event under test conditions agreed to by both parties.
Randi has worked as a professional stage magician and escapologist since the 1950s (he appeared as "The Amazing Randi" on a short-lived TV show entitled Wonderama in 1955), and he entered the international spotlight in the 1970s when he challenged the public claims of Uri Geller.

 Lord of Illusions (1995)
The story opens with the death of the stage magician who hides real sorcery as stage illusion; introduces Barker’s recurrent character of the paranormal private eye, Harry D’Amour; and ends with D’Amour being pursued by phantasmagoric horrors from Hell.
Investigating D’Amour realizes that Swann was in fact a real magician who disguised his abilities by hiding them as stage illusions and that his death was no accident.
There isn’t really much of a plot to it - and the film throws most of it out anyway, only keeping the image of the magician being killed.

To sceptics, Uri Geller is a talented magician and showman who has gained his reputation by falsely claiming to possess paranormal powers — and with some justification.
Geller doesn’t take kindly to those who express their doubts about his alleged psychic ability and there have been several defamation and libel cases brought against his critics, in particular, CSICOP (the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal), Prometheus Books, and James “the Amazing” Randi.
