Magicicada are so well-synchronized developmentally that they are nearly absent as adults in the 12 or 16 years between emergences.
Magicicada population densities are so high that predators apparently eat their fill without significantly reducing the population (a phenomenon called "predator satiation"), and the predator populations cannot build up in response because the cicadas are available as food above ground only once every 13 or 17 years.
Female Magicicada produce timed "wing flick" signals in response to male calls, and the timing of this signal in relation to the male call is species-specific for species of the same life cycle.

Periodical Cicadas (Magicicada spp.)
Most broods are small and unbroken and cover parts of one or a few states, although some are expansive and cover significant portions of the country.
Although the cicadas are not at all good at evading predators, the number of adults which appear simultaneously makes it virtually impossible for a serious dent to be put in the population by predation.

Chapter 3 is a brief examination of "seminal plugs" in Magicicada.
Seminal plugs do not prevent future mating attempts, but I suggest that they may be the products of antagonistic coevolution between females who are time-limited and males who can reduce threats to their paternity by imposing time-costs on females’ future mating attempts.
This chapter documents the signal in different Magicicada species and also describes a bizarre effect (behavioral bisexuality) of a fungus disease in males, as well as a specialized, competitive signal males use to "jam" the acoustical signals of interloping rivals.

The three Magicicada species are easiest to tell apart by their calling songs, although physical and habitat differences can help in identification.
Magicicada species choose broadleaf deciduous woody plants for egg-laying, avoiding conifers, sumacs, and other plants that produce large amounts of resins in response to injury.
Cicadas infected early in an emergence develop asexual fungal spores that render the animal sterile and cause the back of their abdomens to fall off, exposing a white mass of spores that infect other cicadas before the carrier dies.

Magicicada neotredecim is divided into two major geographic groups that emerge in different years; thus, although Magicicada neotredecim last emerged in 1998, another population will emerge in 2002.
Study of Magicicada neotredecim and its interactions with other similar species provides valuable information about this unique species complex, the mechanisms by which life cycles change, and the ways in which populations of the same life cycle become asynchronous.
