The court's name is misleading, in that it exercises a jurisdiction well in excess of that of the state magistrates courts, and similar to that of the District and County courts of the Australian states.
Magistrates presiding in the Murri Court (which deals with Aboriginal defendants) were originally of a mind not to appear robed; however elders within the Indigenous community urged Magistrates to continue wearing robes to mark the solemnity of the court process to defendants.
Magistrates did not exist in U.S. federal courts until 1968, when the office of "United States commissioner" was restructured and renamed to allow district judges to focus on major cases, with lesser matters handled by magistrates.

Chief circuit court judges, in consultation with the chief general district and the chief juvenile and domestic relations district court judges, are responsible for appointing magistrates who serve for four-year terms and may be reappointed.
Magistrates or judges may issue this order if they find reasonable grounds to believe that a person has committed an assault and battery or an act of family abuse against a family or household member and there is probable danger of further acts of family abuse.
In this order, the magistrate may: prohibit the abuser from committing further acts of assault and battery; grant possession of the residence to the victim to the exclusion of the abuser; and prohibit all contact between the abuser and the victim.

A magistrate, on the demand of a party in whose favor he shall have rendered a judgment, shall give a transcript thereof which may be filed and docketed in the office of the circuit court of the county in which the judgment was rendered.
The jurisdiction of magistrates in criminal cases in all counties wherein a county court is established under the provisions of Chapter 9 of Title 14 is hereby abolished.
In counties where magistrates are given separate and exclusive territorial jurisdiction, criminal cases shall be tried in the district in which the offense was committed, unless the place of trial be changed to another district in the same county in the manner prescribed by law.

The Director of Courts is a judge, appointed to this position by the Minister of Justice, pursuant to Section 82 of the Courts Law (Consolidated Text) 5744-1984; he is responsible to the Minister for the orderly operation of the various judicial instances.
A court has ruled that some evidence introduced in the case is based on falsehood or forgery, and there are grounds for supposing that without said evidence the outcome of the trial would have been different, and to the advantage of the defendant.

Among courts facing potential closure tomorrow are Horseferry Road, Thames, Camberwell, Bow Street and Highbury in London, and courts in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester and Stoke on Trent.
The only saving grace in the report is that managers do not think staff would engage in a prolonged national strike, and say some staff - especially in rural areas - may be too loyal to the service to walk out for a day.
