Magnavox Odyssey² - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Magnavox Odyssey², known in Europe as the Philips Videopac G7000, in Brazil as the Philips Odyssey, and also by many other names, is a video game console released in 1978.
The Odyssey² was the first home video game console to introduce what was to become the standard joystick design of the 1970s and 80s: a moderately sized black joystick unit, held in the left hand, with an eight-direction stick that was manipulated with the right hand.
The original Odyssey had a number of removable circuit cards that switched between the in-built games, of which there were 10 in Europe and Asia, or 12 in America.

Magnavox, creator of many Odyssey systems of the "pong" era, decided in 1978 to compete in the cartridge-based console market.
Magnavox also released a voice module to enhance the Odyssey2 gaming experience.
But Magnavox pushed the Odyssey2's full keyboard, and its ads proclaimed "The Keyboard is the Key." This appealed to a few players, but the arcade licenses of the other systems drew far more supporters.

Philips Videopac G7000 - the European Odyssey
The American equivalent, the Odyssey 2 manufactured by Philips' subsidiary Magnavox, even took the third place for some time, behind the Mattel Intellivision and the Atari VCS 2600.
Philips and Magnavox developed some educational programs, but with the bulk of the cartridges the use of the keyboard was limited by hitting the reset button or enter you name for the (let's hope) high-score.
Maybe that was the reason the slogan in the Videopac and Odyssey commercials suggested that the only limitation was your own imagination.

Pong wasn't the first home video game--the Magnavox Odyssey, released in 1972, holds that honor--but it was the first one to gain widespread popularity.
Odyssey² was released in 1978 to compete with the Atari 2600.
The original Odyssey, while certainly a piece of history, has never held much appeal for me, and the Pong-clones the company produced in the mid-70s were not significantly different than those produced by other companies at the time.

 A Guru's World #28: Videogame Consoles - SLCentral
Odyssey2 not only succeeded somewhat because of Magnavox's existing reputation as a home videogame console manufacturer, but also because the Odyssey2 featured a built in QWERTY keyboard that was rarely used by gamers in the United States, but helped with it's success with a number of educational titles overseas.
Magnavox had a tad more success than Bally in 1978 with it's Odyssey2.
The Odyssey2 used a number of preset characters, similar to what a handheld LCD game would use, that made a lot of the games look the same, but because of this idea the graphics were better overall and lacked the flicker that Atari VCS games were often plagued with.
