magnesium - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about magnesium
Magnesium silicate, carbonate, and chloride are widely distributed in nature.
Pure magnesium was isolated in 1828 by French chemist Antoine-Alexandre-Brutus Bussy.
It was simply a magnesium light, which had been fired by the mechanism within the box and carried up to the kite.

Pyroxene   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The pyroxenes are a group of important rock-forming silicate minerals found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks.
The chain silicate structure of the pyroxenes offers much flexibility in the incorporation of various cations and the names of the pyroxene minerals are primarily defined by their chemical composition.
Magnesium, calcium and iron are by no means the only cations that can occupy the X and Y sites in the pyroxene structure.

Mineral Gallery - the Silicate Class
The silicates are the largest, the most interesting and the most complicated class of minerals by far.
Sorosilicates have two silicate tetrahedrons that are linked by one oxygen ion and thus the basic chemical unit is the anion group (Si2O7) with a negative six charge (-6).
This structure forms an unusual hourglass-like shape and it may be due to this oddball structure that this subclass is the smallest of the silicate subclasses.

Science News: Earth's most abundant mineral - magnesium silicate perovskite
With high-pressure experiments, Knittle and Jeanloz have shown that a mineral called magnesium silicate perovskite makes up most of the lower mantle.
And since this region accounts for about two-thirds the bulk of the earth, the researchers believe that magnesium silicate perovskite is the "most abundant building block of the whole planet.'
Magnesium silicate perovskite was discoveredabout 10 years ago by L.-G. Liu at the Australian National University in Canberra.

 The Interior of the Earth
The lower mantle, below the transition zone, is made up of relatively simple iron and magnesium silicate minerals, which change gradually with depth to very dense forms.
Moonquakes of very low energy are caused by land tides produced by the pull of Earth's gravity, and, from analysis of moon- quake data, scientists believe the Moon has two layers: a crust, from the surface to 65 kilometers depth, and an inner, more dense mantle from the crust to the center at 3,700 kilometers.
The crust is presumed to be com- posed primarily of rocks containing feldspar, calcium aluminum silicate, and lesser pyrox- ene, iron and magnesium silicate; the crust also contains basalt in the mares, which con- tains less iron and more titanium than earth basalt.

It has been discovered that the process of catalyst removal from polyols can be improved by adding a critical amount of water, 1.0 to 5.0 percent by weight, based on the weight of polyol to the mixture of polyol and adsorbent prior to heating and filtration.
Synthetic Magnesium Silicate Adsorbent is white fine powder, amorphous, with vesicular structure and huge specific area, it is an amphoteric compound capable of adsorbing either acid or alkali metal catalyst.
It is an efficient refining and purifying agent in the production of polyols for its excellent depicking, deodorizing, potassium ion adsorbing effects and function as filter medium.
