The history of the Heritage River Walk is connected to the Magnetawan River Railway (which was formed in 1901), a steam-operated railway that was mainly used as a freight spur to transport goods from the Magnetawan River to the Grand Trunk Line.
Magnetawan or ‘swiftly flowing river’, was the name the aboriginals gave to the main river of the region.
Magnetawan is situated on an historic section of the Trans-Canada Trail known as Ontario’s Ghost Road.

The passengers left Burk’s Falls at 7:30 AM arriving at Magnetawan about noon, aster stopping at Youngers, Ashdowns and Ballams landings on the river at Midlothian, Geddes and Cowans wharf on the lake when it was flagged or had something for them.
She was the only one of her kind to ply the river; she measured 94’ with an 18’ beam, the deck was 26’ wide.
The white water found on the Magnetawan River is second to none and will give even the experienced white water rafter or kayaker a thrill.

In 1973, the small bay between the Magnetawan bridge and the village locks was declared a sanctuary and closed to angling in May to protect adult fish.
The angling season in the river and lake opens on the third Saturday in May, but waters at the village are dosed until June 1.
A few walleye seem to stay in the river all summer and are caught by casting Rapalas or minnows from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans dock beside the Magnetawan bridge.

The Magnetawan River flows northwesterly through the township and is a fine large stream, and admirably adapted to the purpose of driving the timber from this and adjacent townships.
The Magnetawan Lumber Company also had a mill built here and it grew faster and larger becoming a company town with its own tokens for currency, a public school for its employees children and even a doctor and hospital by the end of the century.
The new school was built high on the rocks, overlooking the Magnetawan River and opened in the fall of 1886.

At the other end of the lake we entered the second section of the Tim River, it was now about 4:00pm, by now it had stopped snowing and was mainly overcast with a brisk wind that made it seem colder than it was.
The river continued on for some time, this section of the river takes a while to paddle as it meanders constantly until you reach the lake.

We entered the river from Wahwashkesh lake, its a fair sized lake but we never had any problems, and the weather was good for us.
In this first stretch of the river you will find a few campsites the nicest one being on a point where the river opens into Big Deep Bay.
One thing that you should keep in mind at all times when traveling down this river, or any other river is safety, you are a long way from anywhere and it could be hours or days before help can be reached.

Spring came late that year and the topic of conversation down at the bowling lanes was whether our trip to Burntroot was in jeopardy because of the ice conditions.
Now one would think that going with the current would be ideal, but with all the sharp turns in the river, we found ourselves bouncing off the shorelines as we were unable to complete the turn.
This game of canoe pinball continued on the rest of the day and with about only 3 hours of daylight left, we found ourselves at the 430m portage which is approximately the half way point of our trip.

The river valley had carved a long straight channel through the hills which happened to be oriented in such a way that the setting sun came down at the end of the valley.
In the bay, the foreground trees cast shadows on the trees in the background, yet a band of light passed into the bay to light up the canoe in a splash of warm yellow light.
