What is a Magnetohydrodynamic Drive?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) drive is an engine with no moving parts that creates thrust by accelerating a charged fluid with an electromagnetic field.
Magnetohydrodynamics in general is the scientific discipline that studies any electrically charged fluids.
However, because their fuel source is electricity and we still lack a cheap means of creating high power-density fuel cells, ships that use the MHD drive must have a heavy onboard generator that burns diesel.

 Magnetohydrodynamic Ion Drive
Ion drives are a subfield of the larger electric propulsion device group.
In a nutshell, ion drives work by ionizing a gaseous fuel such as Xenon and then accelerating it in an electric field and ejecting it out the back of the spaceship.
With the ion drives high it can obtain the same or greater total impulse as a chemical rocket by thrusting for a longer period of time.

Magnetohydrodynamic drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Magnetohydrodynamic drive or MHD propulsor, is a method for propelling seagoing vessels using only electric and magnetic fields with no moving parts, using magnetohydrodynamics.
The movie The Hunt for Red October popularized the magnetohydrodynamic drive as a caterpillar drive for submarines, an undetectable "silent drive" intended to achieve stealth in submarine warfare.
A number of experimental methods of spacecraft propulsion are based on magnetohydrodynamic principles.

 Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)
Magnetohydrodynamics involves magnetic fields (magneto) and fluids (hydro) that conduct electricity and interact (dynamics).
MHD technology is based on a fundamental law of electromagnetism: When a magnetic field and an electric current intersect in a liquid, their repulsive intersection propels the liquid in a direction perpendicular to both the field and the current.
The ten inch diameter tubes are individually wrapped in saddle shaped superconducting magnetic coils made of niobium titanium alloy filaments packed into wires with copper cores and shells.

Magnetohydrodynamic propulsion (A.K.A. MHD motor, MHD drive or Catterpiller Drive).
MHD is just a normal faraday's law generator/motor with the fluid as the moving conductor in place of the copper wire, and the electrodes as the brushes.
You MUST drive a current through the fluid, which means the electrodes must donate and accept electrons to/from the ions in the solution.

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories - MHD III: Hacking an RC Boat to use Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion
As in the case of the simple MHD craft, that means that we need a (strong) magnet and a (large) electric current that flows perpendicular to the magnetic field.
Whereas the seal between the deck and hull is a tidy O-ring, the seal around the drive shaft consisted primarily of a giant pile of grease that had to be scooped out.
Rather than using quarters for the MHD drive electrodes, I used a couple of soft steel brackets that I cut (with a hacksaw) from an old HP plotter paper tray.

These auroral activity indices are derived from ground magnetometer measurements of the magnetic field due to ionospheric currents from 11 to 14 stations spaced around the auroral region, and represent the maximum perturbation from the eastward electrojet (AU), the maximum from the westward electrojet (AL) and the sum of the magnitudes (AE).
The simple analytical model of Goertz et al., derived on the basis of frontside reconnection, force balance in the tail and Alfvén wave coupling to the ionosphere (magnetohydrodynamic waves associated with transverse motion of lines of magnetic force), optimized 6 free parameters for the data set studied.
McPherron and Rostoker [1993] were unsuccessful in reproducing their results on other data sets and suggested that the free parameters were unique to that data set and that there are also storage release contributions to the currents.

Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion: Interesting Thing of the Day
The scientific principle in question is known as magnetohydrodynamics, which is a fairly straightforward combination of magneto (as in magnet), hydro (as in water), and dynamics (as in motion).
So a submarine with an MHD drive would not be quite as stealthy as you might imagine.

The Pursuit Marine Drive produces thrust by using the energy from high-pressure steam to draw in water through an intake at the front and expel it at high speed through the rear.
Steam for the drive is generated in a small boiler burning diesel or petrol.
If the drive is being used to assist propulsion in a ship, the boiler can scavenge waste heat from conventional engines.

The dead-quiet "caterpillar drive" for submarines in the movie The Hunt for Red October is based on a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) drive: as the ship moves forward, seawater flows through multiple channels in a structure built around the rear of the hull.
The electric field drives a current across the channel and through the water; the magnetic force on the current propels the water toward the rear of the channel, thus propelling the ship forward.
