  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Magnificat
The Magnificat is in many places very similar in thought and phrase to the Canticle of Anna (1 Samuel 2:1-10), and to various psalms (xxxiii, 3-5; xxxiv, 9; cxxxvii, 6; lxx, 19; cxxv, 2-3; cx, 9; xcvii, 1; cxvii, 16; xxxii, 10; cxii, 7; xxxii, 11; xcvii, 3; cxxxi, 11).
The "Magnificat" is assigned to Vespers, the "Benedictus" to Lauds, and the "Nunc Dimittis" to Compline.
At the intonation "Magnificat", all who are in the sanctuary arise, and the celebrant (having first removed his birretta "in honour of the canticles") goes with his assistants to the altar, where, with the customary reverences, etc., he blesses the incense and incenses the altar as at the beginning of solemn Mass.

 Magnificat
Six reasons are given by Durandus for the assignment of the Magnificat to Vespers, the first being that the world was saved in its eventide by the assent of Mary to the Divine plan of Redemption.
Like the canticles and psalms, the Magnificat is preceeded and followed by an antiphon varying for the feast or ferial Office, and is sung to the eight modes of plain song.
In Anglican services the Magnificat receives a musical treatment not different from that accorded to the other canticles, and therefore quite dissimilar to that for Catholic Vespers, in which the length of time consumed in incensing the altar allows much greater musical elaboration.

The Magnificat - the canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Luke I: 46-55) - traditionally formed part of the ancient Roman Catholic service of Vespers.
The Magnificat is conceived on a grand scale, requiring five soloists, a five-part choir and, for its time, an unusually large orchestra consisting of three trumpets, two flutes, two oboes, strings and continuo.
The ten verses and Gloria that comprise the Magnificat canticle form a continuous and homogenous whole, in contrast with the libretto of an oratorio or Passion with its wide variety of extracts from many different Biblical and poetical sources.

THE MAGNIFICAT - TRANSLATED AND EXPLAINED 1520-1
The Magnificat belongs to the class of devotional writings, of which we have already presented a specimen in Volume I, “The Fourteen of Consolation.” Like that treatise, it is dedicated to a prince, and reached its noble patron in parts.
Although Luther regards her in one place as sinless, and invokes her aid and intercession at the beginning and close of his work, these are isolated instances; the whole tenor of the exposition is evangelical, and as far removed from the Mariolatry of Rome as from an ultra-protestant depreciation of the Mother of our Lord.
The Magnificat is, besides, a true “mirror for princes,” and reveals Luther’s affectionate concern for the young duke, on whose shoulders such grave responsibilities were ere long to descend.

His choice of soloists for the Magnificat is apt, especially David Thomas who is outstanding as the bass soloist.
The last chorus of the Magnificat is, in my opinion, the most beautiful movement of all.

Because Magnificat is published monthly (with special editions for Advent and Lent), a lot of material can be packed into a relatively small space.

This is another work I find curious among Bach's compositions, probably because I think the Magnificat is so Catholic in origin -- it is the Catholic Church, not the Lutheran, which so worships and celebrates the Virgin Mary.
The Magnificat is the most popular and best-known of all the Gospel canticles, which are Biblical songs from somewhere other than the book of Psalms.
Ultimately, the solo voice drops out seven measures from the end, and the flutes continue until the penultimate measure, but finish somewhat unresolved; the piece ends with a single note in the continuo, perhaps the definitive musical representation of that which the rich receive here.

Bach's setting of the Magnificat is one of his most often-recorded vocal works; as a rule, it's paired with one of Bach's lavishly scored festal cantatas.
The two Magnificat settings by Zelenka presented here are relatively short (about 10 minutes each) and cover most of the text in their opening movements, which are extended choruses with full orchestra and florid soprano solos; each concludes with a splendid fugal "Amen" along the lines of the one Handel used to conclude Messiah.
Kuhnau's Magnificat, on the other hand, has a format much like Bach's: each verse of the canticle is set as a separate short movement, with choruses and solo movements alternating.

 Magnificat
Another fundamental aspect of any reading of the Magnificat is the story of salvation: the Magnificat is not an expression of individual piety or private sentiment but a liberation hymn celebrating God’s great works of salvation on behalf of His servants, of those who fear Him, of Israel, of the redeemed.
Finally, we must read the Magnificat in light of the contemporary vicissitudes of humanity, listening for the prophetic voices of the world’s believers and of those who are building a society that is more worthy of God’s plan and open to the salvific content of the Blessed Virgin’s hymn.
The Magnificat sprang forth from the heart of Mary while she carried the Savior in her womb, and, as Montfort suggests, it should resound in the hearts of the faithful when they receive Jesus Christ, the Lord, in Holy Communion.

MARY SINGS THE PRAISES OF GOD
The word Magnificat, the Latin version of a Greek word with the same meaning, celebrates the greatness of God, who reveals his omnipotence through the angel's message, surpassing the expectations and hopes of the people of the Covenant, and even the noblest aspirations of the human soul.
The Magnificat is the first fruit of the various forms of devotion, passed on from one generation to the next, in which the Church has expressed her love for the Virgin of Nazareth.
Inspired by the Old Testament and by the spirituality of the daughter of Zion, the Magnificat surpasses the prophetic texts on which it is based, revealing in her who is "full of grace" the beginning of a divine intervention which far exceeds Israel's messianic hopes: the holy mystery of the Incarnation of the Word.

 Magnificat - OrthodoxWiki
The Magnificat, also called the Song of the Theotokos, is a hymn taken from the words of the Theotokos.
Shortly after the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel to the Theotokos, she visited the wife of Zachariah, her cousin Elizabeth, who was herself pregnant with John the Baptist; in response to Elizabeth's salutation, Mary spoke the words of the Magnificat, which accordingly appear in the Gospel of Luke, 1:46-55.
Although the Magnificat was originally written in Greek, like other New Testament texts, it is often found in Latin or the vernacular.
