Magnoliidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magnoliidae is a botanical name of a subclass.
The circumscription of the subclass will vary with the taxonomic system being used (there are many such systems).
In the Dahlgren and the Thorne systems the name Magnoliidae is used for the dicotyledons.

 Class Magnoliopsida
It separates the dicots into 6 subclasses with supposed evolutionary relationships to each other illustrated by the "branching" patterns shown in the diagram.
For instance, the Subclass Magnoliidae is placed in a basal position with the other subclasses branching out from it.
This is meant to suggest that the Magnoliidae is the most ancestral of the dicot subclasses and that the other subclasses are derived from it (except for the Asteridae, which would be viewed as having been derived from the Rosidae).

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Magnoliidae -- Spring 1999
His distinction between Ranunculales and Papaverales was based on the number of sepals (more than two in the former, only 2 in the latter) and the generally apocarpous (Ranunculales) versus syncarpous (Papaverales) pistil.
While Takhtajan consider the Ranunculidae to follow naturally after the Magnoliidae in 1987, I inserted the monocotyledonous angiosperms between the two.
It will be instructive to see if this scheme (adopted currently only by Bremer et al.) is accepted as a means to resolving the paraphyletic nature of the dicotyledonous angiosperms which Takhtajan (1997) did not find troubling.

MAGNOLIIDAE Novák ex Takht., 1967: 8 orders, 39 families and 12,000 species.
Thus, I divide the angiosperms into five classes rather than two, the Magnoliopsida and Liliopsida, as done by Cronquist in the tradition of de Candolle (1819).
I accept these entities but within three classes: Magnoliopsida (Magnoliidae), Piperopsida (Piperidae, Nymphaeidae and Nelumbonidae), and the Ranunculopsida (Ranunculidae).

The Magnoliidae consist of 8 orders, 39 families, and approximately 12,000 species, with three of the orders-Laurales, Magnoliales, and Ranunculales-having over two thirds of the species.
The following 7 traits are characteristic of the families listed below, but not necessarily of all Magnoliidae.
Some exceptions to the above are mentioned in the following list of family characteristics (i.e., those exceptions that tend to be true of entire families rather than of scattered genera).

 Magnoliidae
The Magnoliidae consist largely of those dicots that exhibit one or more features of a syndrome of putatively primitive morphological, anatomical, and chemical characters.
The most important of these include 1-pored pollen, apocarpous (unfused) gynoecium, numerous stamens originating in centripetal sequence, lack of vessel elements, and ethereal oils.
Molecular phylogenetic studies also clearly demonstrate that all 3-pored pollen members of the subclass Magnoliidae (order Ranunculales and Nelumbonaceae) belong to a large clade - called "eudicots" - that is characterized by 3-pored pollen.

Subclass Magnoliidae includes 8 orders, 39 families and about 11,000 species.
Families included by Cronquist in this subclass show a tendency for retention of primitive features and, regardless of the classification system, most are placed at the base of the dicot lineage.
His terminal group - the Papaverales - is made up of herbaceous, syncarpous plants.

Trees of Reed: Family Tour, Intro.
Many of the photos on this page are of oaks, which are found in the Beech family (Fagaceae).
Of all the subclasses of flowering plants, Magnoliidae is considered to be the most primitive and Asteridae is considered to be the most advanced, but neither group includes many trees.
For the sake of convenience we've put them together on a single page with the Dilleniidae.
