Magnus, Robot Fighter, 4000 AD - Don Markstein's Toonopedia
Magnus (whose name, Manning said later, was inspired by Maximus, a character in Leonard Starr's newspaper strip, Mary Perkins On Stage) was raised apart from human society, by Robot 1A.
Story-wise, Magnus was one of the better science fiction series in comics — but where it really excelled was in Manning's art.
As envisioned by Valiant Comics' first editor, Jim Shooter (who started his comics career writing The Legion of Super Heroes and went on to become the controversial 1980s editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics), Magnus's world became less unambiguous in terms of moral values.

Part of the problem, of course, is that Americans associate comics with super-heroes, and aren’t often exposed to the undercurrent of broader subject matter that is flourishing in independent comics and in pockets on the web, and has always existed in Europe and Japan.
Similarly, the genius of the original mad comics has never been matched, although it has been the inspiration for subsequent generations of irreverent, “thumbed nose in the face of society” comics like the underground comix of the sixties, independents of the ’80s and many of the more adventurous web comics of the 90’s and beyond.
Magnus, Robot Fighter depicted a semi-utopian world of the year 4000, in which great-looking men and women living in cities of sleek skyscrapers and flying cars had abdicated many of their personal responsibilities to domestic and official robots, with less than ideal consequences.

RUSS MANNING has begun work on a new series of quarterly Tarzan comic books, written, drawn, colored, and edited by Manning himself, under the direction of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Each issue will be 48 pages, in color, well-printed on good paper stock, in the standard format -- though somewhat taller than American comic books.
Current plans call for National Comics to produce all the ERB comic books in the U.S., and for Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. to produce all foreign comics editions.
When cartoonist Russ Manning heard Gold Key Comics editor Chase Craig was seeking a writer for a new series set in the year 4000 AD, he instantly applied for the job.

Magnus, the Robot Fighter, was a character in the Gold Key comics of the 1960s…a lone warrior in a future utopia where robots were the servant class.
After all, Magnus had been raised and trained by the earliest free-will robot who happened to be benevolent and protective towards humans, so he had proof positive that free will was not inherently dangerous.
Magnus fights against the robots only enough to protect the lives of humans, but no further, learns how the robot have come to see him as the oppressor of their kind, and eventually relinquishes his role as “official” robot fighter at the end of the war.

Comic Book Resources - CBR News: "Magnus, Robot Fighter" fights his way back into comics
There was a major shift in the type of comics produced at the time as characters like The Flash, Spider-Man and others captured the minds of comic readers, practically pushing all other genres out.
One of the more successful was Gold Key's "Magnus, Robot Fighter." Created by writer/artist Russ Manning and set in the year 4000 A.D., "Magnus" was one of the few science fiction based comics success stories of the '60s.
The 1990s saw the return of Magnus when Valiant Comics, and later Acclaim Comics, offered up all news tale based on the character, but since then no new material has been published and those classic Russ Manning issues have remained out of print.

Magnus, Robot Fighter stood out from among the hundreds of titles that surfaced during the 1960s comic-book boom for several reasons.
Its premise is classic sf stuff: in a future world grown weak from overdependence on cybernetic servants, Magnus, trained from youth by Robot 1A, protects the continent-wide city NorthAm from renegade robots and evil humans who use the robots against society.
