Malan, a U.S.-trained military strategist who headed the South African security forces during apartheid's most merciless years, gave no hint of resentment at having to listen to an enlisted man testify for several days.
The Malan trial, which started last month and is expected to continue through May, has become a watershed event as post-apartheid South Africa attempts to confront and grapple with its tortured past.
Malan, along with former Law and Order Minister Adriaan Vlok, was the public face of the apartheid power structure during the state of emergency in the mid-to-late 1980s.

The ANC has noted media reports of the possible arrest of several former officers of the SADF including Gen Magnus Malan on allegations of involvement in third force activities that resulted in the murder of 13 people in former KwaMakhutha area, KwaZulu-Natal in 1987.
The ANC is of the view that if indeed the imminent arrest of Gen Malan and others are true, the attorney-general and the police must have had solid information to pursue such a course of action as they have done in the past.
The outcome of such possible prosecution can only expose the nature and extent of third force involvement in the current and previous violence against communities in an attempt to undermine the ANC and its allies and to manipulate the outcome of the transition to democracy.

He said Malan and the others acquitted Friday were involved in planning a military operation against anti-apartheid figures but had no intention or idea it would include hit squads.
The not guilty verdict was also expected to anger anti- apartheid activists who bore the brunt of Malan's military force during their fight against white domination and remain convinced that death squads were sanctioned at the very top.
