"Magny Cours is unusual in that it is probably the only circuit where you cross the start/finish line in first gear accelerating up towards the first left hand corner Grande Courbe which is taken at full throttle in fifth gear at around 170 mph (275 kph).
A modern circuit, Magny Cours contains a mixture of high and low speed turns and whatever its minus points it is a very smooth ride for the drivers with the smoothest surface on the current calendar.

French Grand Prix organisers have confirmed that the 2004 race will not take place at Magny-Cours.
Magny-Cours was dropped from the 2004 calendar because it could not afford to run the race, but has since agreed a new five-year contract to stage the grand prix between 2005-09.
Having failed to conclude negotiations to keep the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours on next year's Formula One calendar, Bernie Ecclestone could switch the event to Paul Ricard- a track he owns through the company Excelis, but which has yet to stage a major international meeting since being comprehensively overhauled.

Next year's French Grand Prix, due to take place at the Magny-Cours circuit in July, has been cancelled because of financial problems, according to a local government official.
When FIA published their 2004 calendar in September, the Magny-Cours race was said to be "subject to contract".
According to L'Equipe, the department in central France which contains Magny-Cours will be asked next month to stump up 4.5 million euros ($7.4 million) to cover the 2003 deficit.
