Magome (馬籠) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō (中山道), an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo.
During the Meiji period, Magome was one of the eleven post towns on the Nakasendō highway (中山道) connecting Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto.
Magome was the birthplace and childhood home of noted author Shimazaki Toson, 島崎 藤村, (1872-1943), who wrote about the Kiso region in his most famous novel, "Before the Dawn" (夜明け前).

The traditional way of hiking the Kisoji is to go from Magome to Tsumago and experience how tough the initial climb up into the mountains is. Although the route is frequently signposted in English, it's a good idea to pick up a map from one of the tourist information offices before you start.
If you choose to walk in the easier direction downhill to Magome, start at Nagiso Station on the Chuo line, from where Tsumago is an hour's walk south through picturesque fields and small villages.
If you're staying at the youth hostel near Kiso-Fukushima and you want to walk the official route, it's still a good idea to alight at Nagiso and catch the bus to Magome, since this is cheaper than continuing on to Nakatsugawa and taking a bus from there.

The walk from Tsumago to Magome takes about 3 hours.

Am going to Tokyo for the 1'st time this Sat, and found a budget hotel, the Tokyo Inn, supposedly located right by Magome Station on the A line.
The hotel directions simply state "take the Asakusha line from Narita Airport to Magome Sta"....but looking at all the guidebooks, etc it does not seem to be possible to do this.
