Magrath was born in Charleston on February 8, 1813, the son of Irish merchant John Magrath and Maria Gordon.
A cooperationist earlier in his career, Magrath supported secession by 1860, feeling “an assurance of what will be the action of the State.” He sat in the state’s secession convention and briefly served as the South Carolina secretary of state.
In December 1864, Magrath was elected governor of South Carolina, the last one chosen by the state legislature.

Magrath Skateboarding Park: 2002 steer raffle proceeds in the amount of $1000 have been set aside for Rob Gough who is leading the development of a town skateboard park.
Lions Park: In conjunction with the Town of Magrath, we built a children's playground in the west end of town, with large swings, carousel, teeter-totters, etc. The large 'Lions Playground' sign was added in 1999 and 10 trees were planted along the west edge of the park in 2000.
Prior to that, canvassing was done in Magrath by the Magrath Lions Club on their behalf for which we collected around $1000/year.

While today Magrath is known as one of America’s foremost authorities on native orchids and is curator of one of the largest plant collections in Oklahoma, Magrath recalled a story from childhood in which he gathered pretty leaves he didn’t know were poison ivy.
Magrath, a 32-year member of the USAO science faculty, is professor of biology, director of interdisciplinary studies and curator of the USAO Herbarium.
Magrath encouraged the 45 graduates and their families to respect the environment, to seek to understand how other cultures work, and to learn from other’s mistakes.

The $48-million Magrath Wind Power Project is an equal partnership between Suncor Energy Inc., EHN Wind Power Canada Inc. and Enbridge Inc. The project’s 20 turbines have the capacity to generate 30 megawatts of green electricity – enough to power approximately 13,000 homes.
Magrath’s zero-emissions electricity production is expected to offset the equivalent of approximately 82,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year – equal to taking about 12,000 vehicles off the road.

When Ukrainian Bishop Lawrence Huculak walked into the historic Magrath Mansion he knew he could use it as his official residence.
Built in 1913 by real estate developer William Magrath, the more than 4,500-square-foot home, which sits on six lots, was taken over by the city for non-payment of taxes in 1937.
Along with the bishop, the Magrath was also once the home of several newly immigrated priests from Ukraine.

This facility is the only one on the west side of town and is well frequented by the 2-9 year old set.
Other playground structures within the Town of Magrath exist, but are geared toward older elementary school children (ages 5-12+).
The Play Shaper 2011 or equivalent is the currently proposed starter upgrade structure designed for children ages 2-5, perhaps with additional phases as finances permit, subject to input from the community project committee.
