Myanmar has targeted to grow 202,500 hectares of oil palm in its southern Tanintharyi division to meet local edible oil demand and so far 60,750 hectares have been used for the purpose, an official report said on Thursday.
Tanintharyi division is suitable for growing oil palm due to its soil, aquatic and climatic conditions and if the cultivation is extended year after year, there will be sufficient supply of edible oil for domestic consumption, said the state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar.
The report recalled that Magway division was once an oil pot at a time when the country has a few millions of population.
