Mahabad is a village near Tabriz, in the province of Azerbaijan in north-western Iran.
Mahabad produces mainly Turkoman pieces, which are easily distinguished from other Persian rugs, with their soft, lush pile and all-over pattern of small geometric Turkish motifs.
A small percentage of Mahabads are very similar in appearance to coarser Tabriz pieces, mainly because of the town's proximity to Tabriz.
