  Shadow Stories of Indonesia
The two most popular and common subjects of Wayang Kulit are the epic Mahabarata and Ramayana stories from India.
Although the stories are well known and retold many times, the fluid medium of Wayang Kulit allows for adaptation, humor, and pontification, keeping the stories up to date and interesting.
The Mahabarata, the largest epic ever written, elegantly depicts Hindu ideals and philosophies and has provided a wealth of inspiration for many cultures.

  India : An overview
The Mahabarata is the larger of the two at 8 times the size of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, the authorship is ascribed to a sage called Vyasa of Aryan descent, but in practice is took many generations to complete.
Mahabarata describes the conflict and eventual victory of good peace loving family, the Pandavas, over their violent, evil cousins, the Kauravas both having equal rights to the Kingdom vacated by the death of king Pandu.
This sermon was inserted as a chapter in the Mahabarata, is known as the Baghvad Gita, it is the most profound Hindu religious writing in history.

Karna, as the Mahabarata Epic goes, was the son of the Albino pygmy Pandu and his consort wife Kunti.
Karna's mother was the daughter of the King named Surasena, the MAHABARATA Epic duplicate of the Ramayana Epic's Sukesi, the older Vedic traditional Sage 'Daksa'.
Thus, the Ramayana and Mahabarata are two different dialictical versions of the same story, tying the two togther as the same person.

The Gita is a small section of a much longer epic, the Mahabarata, attributed to a somewhat mythical sage named Vyasa.
The Mahabarata tells the story of two sides of a single family battling for control of a kingdom.
Throughout the Mahabarata the Pandava brothers try various means to win back the kingdom left to them legitimately by their father, but through deceptions and trickery, Duryodhana constantly humiliates them and retains control.

In both Java and Bali gamelan music may be played for a variety of reasons: (1) for entertainment, (2) for religious ceremonies, or (3) to accompany a theatrical presentation, either a dance performance or a shadow-puppet performance.
Indonesian theater most often draws on two ancient Hindu epic poems, the Ramayana (The Story of Prince Rama) and the Mahabarata (the War of the Baratas), which have been dear to the hearts of many Southeast Asians (including Cambodians, Burmese, Laotians, and Thais) for over one thousand years.
While the Ramayana portrays human relationships, the Mahabarata (The War of the Baratas) relates an heroic tale of the battle between two related families: the Pendawas (the "good side") and the Kurawas (the "bad side").

The story follows well known episodes from the Mahabarata an epic tale which was introduced to Java from Southern India in the 12th century.
Again there are dozens of characters from the Ramayana and Mahabarata stories and their fantastic carved head-dresses, beautiful costumes and wonderful action make them lovely to look at and very easy to use.

It is in ancient Indian epic poems such as such The Mahabarata and The Ramayana that we can read what appear to be references to an otherwise relatively primitive people having the capacity to wield highly destructive nuclear weapons.
Like The Ramayana, which is reckoned to have emerged at around the time when The Mahabarata was taking its final shape, The Mahabarata is made up of fables, parables, essays, poetry and prose from the earliest of times.
For certainly, whether rooted in truth or merely symbolic, the explicitly shocking descriptions of death and destruction to be found in, say, The Mahabarata are undeniably terrifying and, as such, give grave forewarning to all nations of the world of the importance of steering a path of non-violence.

 Euthanasia and Hinduism - ReligionFacts
The most well-known historical practice of suicide associated with Hinduism is that of suttee (Sanskrit sati), the self-immolation (burning to death) of a widow on her deceased husband's funeral pyre.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the custom of suttee probably had little to do with the religion of Hinduism; it was rather an ancient custom based on beliefs that a man needed companions in the afterlife.
The first mention of it outside the Mahabarata is made by a 1st-century BC Greek author writing about 4th-century BC Punjab.

Jean Valentine is one of contemporary poetry’s preeminent ringleaders of the numinous; and in her moving and fine new book, The River at Wolf, she faces head-on the most serious mysteries of desire and death.
She does this with a voice that makes me think of the Javanese shadow theater, in which small, handheld puppets—sharply cut, at once simple and intricate—play out the epics of the Mahabarata projected against a large screen.
Valentine’s poems project strongly into the world that surrounds them, though the flame that throws these shadows comes from a place deep inside, where, she says, “my softness and hardness are filled with a secret light.”

One of the most striking things about The Mahabarata is the utter finality of everyone's actions.
(Parts of The Mahabarata, compiled India, are as much as 2500 years old.) None of this was possible at the time of The Mahabarata.
