All accounts of the temple prior to the British restoration in 1880 indicate that it was an uncared for and neglected ruin, with the ground floor and second floor chambers collapsed.
It was in 1880 that the Governor of Bengal appointed J.D. Beglar to restore the temple in conjunction with the Burmese.
However, one photograph of the temple during clearance reveals a ribbed object near the south-east corner of the plinth, that might be the remains of a small Stupa.

Gaya's fame to the world, the 1,500 year old Mahabodhi Temple, is under the threat of losing its world heritage status after a UNESCO team gave the Bihar government an 'F' for failing to follow the UN guidelines and allowing housing and business establishments to mushroom around the temple in violation of UN-provided minimum requirements.
An UN team is expected to visit the temple where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment nearly 2,500 years ago later this month to evaluate the condition of the temple and one-mile radius around it.
The Rabri government had assured the UN that it would ensure the guidelines were followed and the temple maintenance was done on a regular basis in adherence to the prescribed codes.
