The first is the deltaic drainage of the Mahanadi river system into the lake via rivers of more recent origin including Bhargavi, Daya, Nuna, Makra etc. which contributes the major part of the freshwater and silt input to the lagoon.
While the distributaries of the Mahanadi contribute 75% (2,75,297 tonnes), the rivers/ streams from the western catchment are responsible for only 25% (90,203 tonnes) of the silt load in to the lagoon.

Eleven people drowned in the floods, seven died in wall collapses and three deaths were caused by snake bites.
Floods in neighbouring Chhatisgarh, from where the Mahanadi originates, have increased the inflows into the Hirakud reservoir forcing the authorities to open 36 sluice gates to release over 600,000 cusecs of water into the river.
The good news is that it has stopped raining in both upper and lower catchment areas of the Mahanadi.

Some 312,000 hectares of crops have been devastated by the floods, ironically, in a region that was suffering from drought prior to this year's monsoons.

The quantum of water flowing through the Naraj gauge station near Cuttack was likely to cross the 10 lakh cusecs mark tomorrow as it continued to rain in the catchment areas of the Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh as well as the lower catchment areas in the State.
The Water Resources Secretary, Bijay Patnaik, said that although floodwater had receded a bit, the Mahanadi and its tributaries were flowing above the danger level at various places in the coastal districts.

 RIL strikes fresh gas in Mahanadi river basin
Reliance Industries Ltd has reported a new commercial natural gas find in the shallow waters of the Mahanadi basin off the Orissa coast.
The find is estimated to be about four times bigger than the Hazira field of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in Gujarat, which had reserves of 0.7 trillion cubic feet of gas before it started production.
Dry gas is essentially the one that is not accompanied by crude oil.

 The Hindu Business Line : Orissa demands free power from Mahanadi Coalfields' project
In an unprecedented move, the Orissa Government has placed a demand for 12 per cent free power from a generation project proposed by Coal India Ltd (CIL) as part of its plans to diversify into power generation.
Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd's (MCL), a subsidiary of CIL, is in talks with Orissa Government for setting up a 2,000-MW thermal power plant.
However, during the negotiations, the State Government came up with the demand for 12 per cent of the power generated by the plant free of cost, as is done in the case of hydel power generation.
