The Maharashtra government on Monday admitted that taxes on petrol and diesel in the state were quite high and said it would rationalise them after receiving the recommendations from a high-level committee, which is expected to submit its report within a week.
Faced with air pollution levels that on some days force the elderly and the asthmatic to stay indoors and have some foreigners contemplating a move to cleaner climes, the government of this financial city said that it was time to get tough on the worst polluters.

Maharashtra was the first state in India to have water pollution control legislation in India in 1970.
Though the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is supposed to establish a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and the industrial units have to treat their effluents, visits to at least 15 units showed that they discharge effluents in open drains.

Both MPCB and MCZMA are surprised as to how the port could permit import of the chemicals, especially as it did not have the necessary fire-fighting equipment to handle such cargoes.
Despite directions from the MPCB, MCZMA and the Ministry of Environment that handling of hazardous chemicals cannot be permitted at the port, the JNPT has allowed an importer to handle ethyl alcohol at the jetty.
The MPCB, in a letter to the JNPT Chairman dated April 2, had pointed out that it had issued show-cause notices to seven terminals located in the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) area in the vicinity of the port for storing hazardous chemicals.

Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has received financial and technical assistance from United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to carry out e-waste (electronic waste) assessment study for the Mumbai and Pune Region.
MPCB now invites technical and financial proposal from domestic expert consultancy agencies/organizations for carrying out this study.
MPCB will issue the tender documents after scrutinizing the capability profile by December 15, 2005.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, when asked whether it had a role in analyzing samples of wastes imported from abroad, washed its hands of the problem saying it is up to Customs to undertake such an analysis.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a showcause notice to the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) for operating without its consent from June 1992.
The notice said the port had not been treating its domestic and industrial effluents and was generating sewage without the pollution board's consent.
The MPCB's consent is necessary under Section 25 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has served closure notices to as many as 234 industrial units including multinationals -- Cadbury and Bayer -- for failing to participate in the common hazardous waste management programme before the December 30, 2003 deadline.
MPCB had initiated the common hazardous waste management facility after they realised that many companies, especially the smaller ones, did not have appropriate means to dispose the waste they generated.

 India's Supreme Court Panel Cracks Down on Hazardous Waste
Initially, the Committee said it had called on India's state level pollution control boards, and asked them to make detailed presentations on their efforts to comply with the Supreme Court ruling on hazardous wastes.
In subsequent meetings elsewhere around India, officials of pollution control boards from other states were asked to report to the Committee on steps they had taken to implement the Supreme Court's directions.
For instance, the committee directed the Delhi Pollution Control Board to implement the court's direction for closure of all unauthorized hazardous waste generating units in the first week of July.

The MPCB used the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, asking NPCL to pay up arrears of Rs 32.66 crore water cess since 1983 for the water used at its Tarapur atomic plant in Thane district.
The water cess collected by MPCB is remitted to the Centre, which in turn reimburses 75 per cent back to the agency for implementing environmental projects of national importance.
The board’s total cess collection stands at Rs 14.4 crore, which should have been Rs 25.92 crore if up to 80 per cent of the potential is realised, according to an internal CRISIL report released in August 2005.

He said the MPCB has lauded the PMC’s ban on plying six-seaters on five select routes and recommended that the ban be extended to the 14 intended routes at the earliest.
The MPCB also supported the PMC’s decision to ban entry of heavy vehicles to congested roads in core city areas, protests from traders notwithstanding.

Mumbai (PTI): The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has issued a showcause notice to the Tarapur nuclear power plant for not getting the board’s approval for running the recently commissioned two units.
But the pollution control board has refused permission till its dues on water cess, to the tune of Rs 32 crore since 1983, are paid by the plant, Boralkar said, adding that the amount did not include the penal interest.
This is the first time that the Maharashtra Pollution Control board has targeted a government body.

 DPC violated pollution control norms, says MPCB chief
Mumbai, March 13: Maharashtra Pollution Control Board chairman Mushtaq Antulay said prima facie the Dabhol Power Company (DPC) has violated the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act by launching the trial runs of block b (722 mw) of phase-II.
Mr Antulay, who is the son-in-law of the former Maharashtra chief minister AR Antulay told The Financial Express that the company did not take due permission from the MPCB to start the trial runs for the block b (722 mw) of phase-II since January 21.
The Union finance secretary Ajith Kumar has convened a meeting on March 16 with the Maharashtra government officials to discuss the issue related to the invocation of counter guarantee for the non-payment of the December bill of Rs 102 crore by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB).

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board’s (MPCB) new laboratory, with state-of-the-art facilities to monitor pollution was inaugurated at Mahape, Navi Mumbai, on Sunday by Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar.
While the (MPCB) has had its central laboratory at Belapur for over three decades, in the new laboratory, equipment have been significantly upgraded and many are a first of their kind in the country.
Our old laboratory was mainly geared to deal with sampling air and water pollutants,’’ he said, referring to the previous setup at CIDCO Bhawan, Belapur.
