The Mahawamsa: There were Hindu temples in Lanka from pre-Buddha Times " Nagulesweram in the North, Thiruketheesweram and Munnesweram in the West, Murugan and Vishnu temples in the South and Konesweram in the East.
The Mahawamsa raises the curtain with the reign of King Devanampiyatissa, despite the fact that there was a long line of Tamil Hindu kings ruling Lanka before him.
The Mahawamsa was written in the 5th-6th A. in Pali because at that period, the new language "Sinhala" was still in the offing and as such was not suitable for the compilation of a treatise of great importance.

According to Geiger, it seems that the Buddhist Era should be counted from 483 BC, which is the date that historians have got using the Mahawamsa, which is the most accurate record of subcontinental chronology we have for the period.
Now, according to the Mahawamsa, the year of the Buddha's demise coincided with the arrival of Vijaya in Thambapanni.
So there seems to be some kind of synchornity between the Mahawamsa date for Vijaya's arrival and the advent of Prakrit Brahmi in the island.
