 Drought and delayed relief
THE tribal hamlet of Gairangadda, home to around 40 Lambada families, in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh is a forgotten and cut-off patch of human misery where severe drought conditions have rendered more wretched, if that is at all possible, the conditions under which its men, women and children live and labour.
This correspondent visited two areas in Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda districts, where the drought has been most severe, and one area in Medak district where its intensity is just picking up.
Almost a third of Andhra Pradesh is in the grip of a drought as a result of the failure of the monsoon and the failure of the State Government to heed the warning signals.

 AP govt’s new take on Swarna project - Sify.com
According to the KWDT, Karnataka’s share in Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme was 1.2 tmc ft of water to cultivate an ayacut of 5,890 acres and AP’s 15.9 tmc ft for an ayacut of 87,000 acres in Mahbubnagar district.
The state said in a letter to the Karnataka government that the project would drastically reduce inflow to Andhra Pradesh’s Mahbubnagar district.
The Swarna project would further affect Mahbubnagar as a higher discharge of 4,765 cusecs was designed for its canal compared to 850 cusecs for the Mahbubnagar canal.
