Mahendra Pal Chaudhry (born 9 February 1942) is the leader of the Fiji Labour Party and currently the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
Chaudhry helped to launch the Fiji Labour Party in 1985, and was elected to Parliament for the first time in the general election of 1987.
Chaudhry's ancestral ties are with the village of Bahu Jamalpur in Rohtak District, in the Indian state of Haryana.

For 56 days, Prime Minister Chaudhry and most of his cabinet, along with many Parliamentarians and their staff, were held as hostages while Speight attempted to negotiate with the President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who denounced the coup and declared a state of emergency, and with the military administration which took office on 29 May.
Charging corruption, Chaudhry revoked the contracts of two marketing firms, both chaired by Speight, that were involved in the country's lucrative timber trade, and by the time of the coup he was allegedly bankrupt.
Mahendra Chaudhry has supported the view that ethnic nationalism was only a mask to gain the support of nationalist Fijians, and that the true purpose was to loot the treasury.

A Cabinet Minister in the government of Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, Momoedonu was the only minister not present in the Parliament building when George Speight stormed the complex on May 19, 2000, taking Chaudhry and other government members hostage and staging a coup d'état.
Mara moved to spare the country further constitutional trauma by resigning officially, retroactive to May 29, 2000 (the day on which he had been deposed), thereby validating the Iloilo regime, which was duly affirmed by the Great Council of Chiefs.
He argued that defections from Chaudhry's Labour Party meant that he no longer had majority support in the House of Representatives, and therefore the President was not obliged to appoint him.
