The fossil flora at Mahenge is dominated by plants in the legume family (Leguminosae).
This is the family that food plants such as beans, peas, and soybeans come from, as well as common trees such as redbud, fl locust, honey locust, mimosa, mesquite and many others.
However, the diversity and abundance of legumes at Mahenge is greater than we first thought based on the relatively few plant specimens collected in 1996.

A preliminary analysis of leaf area, which is positively correlated with mean annual and wet season precipitation, indicates that rainfall at Mahenge was approximately 700 mm/year, or about 400mm/yr less than what would be required to support tropical forest vegetation today.
The Mahenge flora provides a first data point for paleoclimate in the Eocene of tropical Africa and the paleovegetation reconstruction fits well within the larger framework established by a limited number of palynological and fossil wood records from North and West Africa.
Our interpretation ofthe Mahenge paleocommunity is concordant with the hypothesis that forest vegetation was not yet established within the tropical belt of Africa 46 million years ago.

Fossil legumes from the Middle Eocene (46.0 Ma) Mahenge flora of Singida, Tanzania   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The Mahenge flora complements a sparse Palaeogene tropical African fossil plant record, which until now consisted of a single macrobotanical assemblage, limited palynological studies in West Africa and Egypt, and fossil wood studies primarily from poorly dated deposits.
Mahenge leaf macrofossils have the potential to add significantly to what is known of the evolutionary history of extant African plant groups and to expand the currently limited knowledge of African Palaeogene environments.
Two additional leaf types are less well understood: one appears to be referable to the Caesalpinioideae and subfamily affinities of the other taxon are unknown.

Fossil leaves from the Mahenge paleontological site in north-central Tanzania estimate mean annual precipitation at 536 to 731 mm/yr, near modern, and wet seasonal precipitation at 437 to 451 mm, supporting absence of monsoon circulation and wetter dry seasons than today.
