The Narmada Bachao Andolan has called for scrapping of the Maheshwar power project on Narmada citing the latest report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in which the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has been severely indicted for "irregular'' disbursement of loans amounting to nearly Rs.
Since the entire outstanding amount on this loan is not recoverable from the immovable properties of the Maheshwar project alone, the MPSIDC has now issued further Revenue Recovery Certificates to make the recoveries from the properties of the directors of S. Kumars in Mumbai and Indore.
It has said that the decision needs to be taken to use this investment in reducing the huge transmission and distribution losses of the State, that is almost 45 per cent of the total electricity generated.

Maheshwar Dam, which falls in central Madhya Pradesh state and is one of a series of large dams in the Narmada Valley project, is being built by a private contractor, S Kumar, whose foreign funders have deserted it following controversy over resettlement.
According to Palit, the Maheshwar project has long ceased to be of public interest because of constantly inflated cost estimations made by the promoters who hope to recover it through power tariffs far in excess of existing ones.

In the Maheshwar valley the NBA activists have been battling the Shree Maheshwar project for seven years, but their focus was primarily on the valley where it will displace several farmers and submerge fertile agricultural land, and -- to an extent -- on the foreign lenders and collaborators.
But the facts presented by the activists make it clear that there is more than reasonable doubt about the viability of the project, even without going into critical issues such as rehabilitation of displaced persons and land available for their resettlement.

THE single largest source of foreign funds for the Maheshwar project is a loan of Rs.523 crores from a German bank, the HypoVereinsbank.
The decision of the inter-ministerial committee is awaited, and the delay has caused considerable anxiety to the activists and the people the Maheshwar dam will displace; not to mention S. Kumars, the private company entrusted with the development of the project.
