Mahnomen County: While the flooding was not as extensive in this community—only 16 percent of its total households were affected—it is faced with some unique circumstances.
The county is entirely within the bounds of the White Eagle reservation; however, approximately 10 percent of the property is privately held.
Census shows that the population of the county is about 25 percent Native American, however, school figures indicate that 67 percent of the students are Native American; the difference being attributed to low census response on the reservation lands.

From 2001 through 2003, Mahnomen County, which lies within the White Earth Ojibwe Reservation, had both the highest alcohol-related fatality rate and the highest rate of DWI arrests, with one arrest for every six people in the county and one death for every 865 people, the state numbers show.
Cass County, targeted along with 13 other counties for special DWI enforcement next year, had 26 deaths in the three years, more than metro-area Anoka, Dakota and Washington counties each had, despite their vastly greater numbers of people and cars.
Even though Cass County's population of 27,150 is a fraction of all the other counties on the list, it had the fifth-highest number of deaths, with 26.

F.W. Kenney of Kenney and Halden of Minneapolis designed the courthouse, which was built by Carl Nelson of Mahnomen in 1910 at a cost of $9,763.
In 1975, Mahnomen County remodeled and built an $808,000 addition to the courthouse.

We proposed redefining Clearwater and Mahnomen Counties and the White Earth Indian Reservation portion of Becker County to the Duluth wage area because FWS employees who work for closely related Bemidji Area Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities in northern Minnesota are currently in two separate FWS wage areas.
We therefore proposed that Clearwater and Mahnomen Counties be redefined from the North Dakota wage area to the Duluth wage area.
