Mahoba is a town in Mahoba District of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, in the Bundelkhand region.
Mahoba was the capital of the Chandela Rajputs, who ruled Bundelkhand from the 10th to the 16th centuries.
The Bundela leader Maharaja Chhatrasal captured Mahoba in 1680, during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Another prominent scripture which has an account of Mahoba's grandure is the Jain text 'Prabhandh-kosh' which refers to its magnificence which could only be realized and not described.
Mahoba has been famous for its betal-leaves cultivation ever since the first Chandella ruler Chandra-Verman who adopted it as his capital.
Its later history is un-eventful except for the local revolt in the first freedom struggle of 1857 AD when the british Sub-divisional Magistrate, Mr Carne, had to flee and seek refuge in the nearby Charkhri estate which was being ruled by Raja Ratan Singh.

Yet, the fact remains that the otherwise obscure little village, lying on a rocky tract in the betel-leaf-growing belt of Mahoba, has turned into a pilgrimage centre for thousands who have been defying the police and social organisations.

The National Commission for Women today pulled up the media for sensationalising the alleged suicide by a woman on the pyre of her husband in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh as sati and said this was a fit case for being referred to the Press Council of India.
Observing that nobody denied the fact that the 55-year-old woman had immolated herself on her husband Man Shah's funeral pyre on November 11, the committee noted that ''beyond this, there was nothing that would enable one to describe this case even remotely bordering on sati ''.
