		In 1988 the Ohio Department of Health issued a contact and fish consumption advisory for the lower Mahoning River beginning at the City of Warren and extending to the Ohio Pennsylvania State line.
		This portion of the Mahoning River flows through eight municipalities - the City of Warren, the City of Niles, the Village of McDonald, the City of Girard, the City of Youngstown, the City of Campbell, the City of Struthers, and the Village of Lowellville.
		The Mahoning River Environmental Dredging Project is the second largest USACE restoration project, second only to the restoration of the Everglades.

		The application for "Mahoning river" license plates may be combined with a request for a special reserved license plate under section 4503.40 or 4503.42 of the Revised Code.

		The Shenango river flowing south out of Mercer county, and receiving Neshannock creek from the north-east at Newcastle, meets (2 miles further south) the Mahoning river from the State of Ohio, and becomes the Beaver river.
		All the upland east of the Neshannock and east and west of the Beaver river is occupied by the Ferriferous limestone supporting the three Kittanning coal beds; and in Big Beaver and Perry townships the high divides hold also the two Freeport coal beds, and even some of the lowest Barren measures.

		The river sediment was contaminated from the heavy industrial use of the Mahoning River Valley through the early and mid 20th Century.
		Despite this improvement, recent studies of the lower Mahoning River's ecosystem [including the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA's) 1994 Water Quality Study] suggest that the ecology of the Mahoning River will not be restored unless the contaminated sediments are removed, remediated, or capped and some or all of the dams are removed.

	The Mahoning River Education Project - River Restoration
		The Mahoning River begins near Winona in Columbiana County, a few miles southeast of Alliance, and flows through five counties of eastern Ohio (Columbiana, Stark, Portage, Mahoning, Trumbull) and one county in western Pennsylvania (Lawrence)*.

		The Turnpike's newest river bridges are on the Beaver Valley Expressway where the Mahoning River bridges (Northbound and Southbound) were built in 1992.
		The Mahoning River bridges are notable for the use of so-called weathering steel in their construction.

	Vindicator • It's time to reclaim the Mahoning River
		The 10 municipalities along the Mahoning River between Warren and the Pennsylvania line don't have the money to invest in something that many residents consider a luxury.
		Which means that if the Mahoning River is to be restored, the consortium, along with the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments and local development agencies will have to find other sources of revenue to make up the $35 million local share.
		For their part, the 10 communities along the river should write to Gov. Bob Taft and to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources requesting a special allocation from a fund that is used to pay for environmental clean-up of old industrial sites.

	Girard History
		The reason the town of Girard was founded 150 years ago was the dam on the Mahoning River that can still be seen from the viaduct.
		This canal was to run from the Ohio River, up the Beaver River and then up the Mahoning River and on to Akron, where it would connect with other parts of the Ohio canal system.
		When the river froze over in the winter, there were sleigh races and young people skated as far north as Warren.
