As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 42,518, making Boardman the fifth most populous township in the state of Ohio.
In the township the population is distributed by age as follows: 20.79% under the age of 18, 7.56% from 18 to 24, 26.39% from 25 to 44, 24.91% from 45 to 64, and 20.35% who are 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the township is $42,159, and the median income for a family is $54,106.

Mahoning is one of the original townships of Lawrence County.
The canal was abandoned between Youngstown and the mouth of the Mahoning in 1872.

The news comes as a surprise to Mahoning officials, who thought they met the requirement and were counting on the $100,000 a year to help build sewers in lower-income neighborhoods.
The township could follow the lead of cities such as Los Angeles and states such as Utah and sue the Census Bureau to force an adjusted count.

Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo said a preliminary set of blueprints has been drawn up for a building to replace the current township building on U.S. Route 224, which was built in 1948 and remodeled several times, most recently in 1963.
The township building has a leaking roof, lack of space, bad flooring and bathrooms that are not handicapped-accessible, Pezzuolo said.
The building would be too expensive to remodel into township offices and is too expensive to heat during the winter.
