Mahwash's teacher, Hashem, died in Germany, but, she reunited with his two brothers, Asif and Arif, at the London Concert for Afghanistan, on March 14 2002 a charity event in aid of Care, Medicines sans Frontières, Ockenden International and Save the Children.

For now, Mahwash (who performs March 6 at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver) enchants only Western audiences with her exquisite performances of Afghan classical and semi-classical repertoire, along with ghazals (songs based on romantic poetry).
By the early '90s, when Afghanistan was mired in factional fighting and Mahwash received threats against her and her family, she was ready to choose a life in exile.
Instead, Mahwash will be on stage with Aziz Herawi, a master of the lute-like rubab (Afghanistan's national instrument) and sitar, Ahsan Ahmad on tabla, Khalil Raghed on harmonium and vocals and flutist Henri Tournier, who played on the Radio Kaboul album.

"Ustad" Mahwash and Ensemble Kaboul will bring to Haverford the rich musical tradition of Radio Kaboul, the state radio that flourished in Afghanistan before the arrival of the Soviets and was utterly silenced during the reign of the Taliban.
Ensemble Kaboul was founded in 1995 by a group of defiant expatriates who fled Taliban rule, and its concerts are an intoxicating blend of airy melodies of Tajik minstrels, ecstatic festival songs, classical ragas, and brilliant instrumental pieces.
She was named Artist of the Year in 1970 in Afghanistan and in 1977 was granted the coveted title of "Ustad" (Master), the only woman ever to be granted that title.
