World Cinema: Directors -- Mai Zetterling
Mai Zetterling secured her first part at the age of sixteen and won international attention for her role (which she always considered her best) as the prostitute in Hets / Frenzy / Torment (1944), directed by Alf Sjöberg.
Zetterling the actress, with her blonde hair and clear blue eyes, had a graceful femininity, both frail and lively.
As a director, she was sharp, tough and socially uncompromising, creating psychologically complex characters often from an overtly feminist point of view.

 The Girls/Flickorna
After Zetterling died from cancer in 1994, “I found there had been too little written about her and her life as a visionary filmmaker and actress,” recalled Olofson in a statement that had been issued with Lines from the Heart.
Zetterling does not honor her sex as much as she envisions it as a prison.
Now it’s stone…I dream of turning it into a hive of creativity for friends and soulmates.” She may have believed that luck was essential for a fulfilling life and whatever happiness may be, but The Girls is the end result of mounting dissatisfaction and terminal frustration.

Slant Magazine - DVD Review: The Girls
Mai Zetterling's stridently grrl-powered picture goes for an amalgam of all three takes, only to topple into a whole Euro-art festival's worth of strained fantasy sequences.
The Girls is a confused feminist manifesto, but it's at least never boring, and Zetterling's militantly sardonic humor, simultaneously leery of women's acceptance of their oppression and hopeful of their potential for change, provides an awareness of the film's frequent ludicrousness that both lightens and sharpens her critique.
Ostensibly a tribute to Mai Zetterling, it works best as the best film Henry Jaglom never made, with Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom, and Bibi Andersson looking back at their careers and lives, and being invigoratingly able to have a good laugh over all of it.

In her autobiography, "All Those Tomorrows," she notes, "When the reviews of my first full-length feature movie came out, I was horrified to read that 'Mai Zetterling directs like a man.' What did that mean?" As an actress she was considered no threat.
Most notable among her more recent films are "We Have Many Faces" (1975), which drew on "the pain and misery of the break-up of my marriage"; "Of Seals and Man" (1978), detailing the disappearing breed of Eskimo seal hunters; and "Scrubbers" (1982), which dealt with young female offenders sent to Britain's Borstal prison.
Zetterling never entirely gave up her acting career, either; in one of her last roles she was especially memorable as the wise grandmother who warns her grandson about "The Witches" (1990).
