are wizards men? or something else? - THE TOLKIEN FORUM
Wizards are Maia sent to Middle-Earth by the Valar early in the Third Age when it became apparent that Sauron was again taking shape.
The maia (including the wizards, the balrog, and Sauron) are like angels.
In LotR, The Wizards are the Istari, the five demi-gods (Maiar) sent to sort M-e out.

One Risus to Rule Them All...
The most notable of the Maia remaining in Middle-earth are the dark lord Sauron, the wizards Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast and the demons of shadow and flame known as Balrogs.
Such is the case of Sauron, greatest of the Maiar on Middle-earth who was driven back again and again over the ages and who ever seeks to increase his power and influence over the world.
The number of Maia in Middle-earth is intentionally small as the potential power each can wield could easily disrupt and destroy much which the Valar first built.

 The Astronomy of Middle
The moon was piloted by Tilion (a male Maia, or lesser Ainur), while the sun was driven by Arien (a female Maia).
This continued to bother Tolkien, along with the deeper issues of a flat earth (as it was before the destruction of Númenor) and the problems of creating the sun and moon in any realistic manner.
Varda commanded the Moon to journey in like manner, and passing under Earth to arise in the east, but only after the Sun had descended from heaven.

In rare circumstances, that Vala would choose such a person to be a representative for them in Middle Earth, a sort of lesser equivalent to a Maia, and to that end would grant them a small measure of a Maia's power.
I can agree that d20 is not very fitting for Middle Earth, but d20 is my favorite so I would like to a ME CS even if I change a lot of the spells and rules in the PHB.
All in all, Middle Earth would be the classiest, richest CS out there.

Middle-earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien insisted that Middle-earth is (part of) our Earth in several of his letters, in one of them (no. 211) estimating the end of the Third Age to about 6,000 years before his own time.
Thus the three Silmarils ended in the sky with Eärendil, in the earth, and in the sea respectively.
In the First Age the most active Maia is Melian, wife of the Elven King Thingol; in the Third Age, during the War of the Ring, five of the Maiar have been embodied and sent to Endor to help the free peoples to overthrow Sauron.

Man in the Moon (Middle-earth) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien's Middle-earth folklore as set forth from the Hobbots, the Man in the Moon is described as being an old being who secretly hid on the island of the Moon, and built his minaret there.
Combined with the Elven lore, as presented in the legendarium of Silmarillion, the Man in the Moon of the Hobbits' tales must have his origins in the legend of Tilion the Maia.
This is alluded to further in Tolkien's Roverandom, where the Man in the Moon also lives in a Minaret.

According to the legends of the Elves, Tilion was an unsteady steersman, sometimes dwelling overlong beneath the Earth, or appearing in the sky at the same time as the Sun.

The Moon first rose above Valinor in the far West of the World, but Varda came to change this arrangement, so that the Moon would pass beneath the World, and arise in the east instead, as it does to this day.

If the eagles were so separate from the rest of the creatures of middle earth, why did they bother to help in the end.
There is also this: the only "persons" who could order the Eagles, as Nienna has been hinting, to do anything are Manwe (it was his thought, his singing in the Song of Making that caused them to be) and possibly Gandalf, as a Maia of Manwe's people.
Even if the Eagles could fly for any length of time in the polluted air (doubtful), they wouldn't have the oxygen they need for evasive maneuvers---and trust me, they would be spotted.

 LotR Fanatics Library: Lore FAQ
The Elves’ motive in making the rings was to preserve what they loved and to prevent the weariness of the world, which they experienced in Middle-earth (where they were noble), but not in the Undying Lands (where they weren’t overly special).
However, when he decided to further the story of The Hobbit, as well as his mythology in the Silmarillion, Tolkien explained that the Ring’s power of turning the bearer invisible was caused by Sauron’s part in the forging of the rings, since he was a Maia spirit who lived in the wraith world.
For this is the Ring of Fire, and herewith, maybe, thou shalt rekindle hearts to the valour of old in a world that grows chill." Thus, the ring would keep Gandalf from growing tired of the mortal world, and perhaps more importantly, it allowed him to inspire other people to do courageous acts.

While Werewolves possess the intelligence of the Secondborn - and though they can speak, use tools, and cast spells - they remain Wolf-like in their nature.
