Actually, her fame as a singer has started to outshine her acting career, and her notoriety as one of the world’s fussiest divas has become a big factor in her image as well.
Maid finds Lopez back I the romantic comedy territory she first explored with 2001’s The Wedding Planner.

Modamag.com | Maid in Manhattan - Jennifer Lopez, Ralph Fiennes, Bob Hoskins (Movie Review)
“Maid” is a rather unchallenging film, and Wang is just the man to flex some romantic comedy muscles that may have atrophied a little bit in recent years, and brings some freshness to the worn-thin genre.
The biggest working component in "Maid" is Jennifer Lopez, who for the first time in a long time, is able to squeeze out some actual onscreen appeal in a way her off-screen persona has been overshadowing in recent years.
Being light and bubbly is in "Maid In Manhattan‘s" best interests, for when it steps outside of this, and tries to engage a not-too-subtle class conflict subplot, the effect drowns the picture instantly.

Ralph Fiennes and Jennifer Lopez in Columbia's Maid in Manhattan
She's starred in some down right awful films (most notably this year's "Enough") but in "Maid" she gives what I call a "non-laughable performance." There were a couple moments here or there where she's not really convincing, specifically in the more dramatic scenes, but what matters is that she's improving.
She's not quite there yet, but she's slowly beginning to prove herself to be a decent actress (if only she could do the same with her music.) If she is going to continue with movies she should stick with the lighter entertainment ones because the genre has been to kind her.

Marisa (Jennifer Lopez), a maid and single mother working in Manhattan, accidentally stumbles upon Christopher (Ralph Fiennes), a kind Republican assemblyman who is staying at her hotel.
I was expecting “Maid In Manhattan” to show Christopher and Marisa discovering each other’s inner beauty, and that would overcome any financial obstacles.
The biggest problem with “Maid In Manhattan,” however, and the most disturbing issue with most recent romances, is that there is no real reason for these two people to fall in love in the first place.

With "Maid in Manhattan," Wayne Wang is just the latest in a long line of contemporary filmmakers who have proved they're not up to the task.
It should have been easy to make "Maid in Manhattan" work, particularly considering that rags-to-riches Cinderella stories are so universally compelling.
There are the usual obstacles (it turns out that Caroline is after Christopher too) and the typical second bananas (Stanley Tucci is Christopher's straitlaced handler; Marrissa Patrone is Marisa's friend, a fellow maid who's obsessed with penis size, a gag that's stupefyingly unfunny even the first time she pulls it).

 Maid in Manhattan (2002)
Maid in Manhattan is one of those "relationship despite social class boundaries" films that you know is going to be predictable, which is usually okay so long as the story is well-executed and at least has a little spirit behind it.
Fiennes plays a wealthy senator and Lopez plays a maid in the hotel he stays at, and because they are from different social classes it's treated like the second coming of Bill and Monica when they make a pair.
I suppose if you aren't expecting much, Maid in Manhattan is acceptable as a light-hearted piece of fluff, but most moviegoers will probably be distracted by its inconsistency in relation to the real world.

Wade's screenplay may be obvious, but he imbues it with upstairs/downstairs themes ('Strive to be invisible' says a sign in the maids' locker area) and milks comedy from unlikely places (Ty's a Nixon expert, a pair of middle-aged French women pilfer from an unattended maid cart).

Jennifer Lopez stars as Marisa Ventura, a single mother who works as a maid in an elegant Manhattan hotel that admonishes its service staff to "strive to be invisible." Marisa generally succeeds in blending into the background, but one day she meets Chris Marshall (Ralph Fiennes), Senatorial candidate and America's only pro-environmental Republican.
The key to this kind of movie is the characters and their relationships, and Maid in Manhattan gives us two appealing leads.
She and the other maids at the hotel amount to little besides a stale, "You go girl" cliché, and when they broke into song right before the straight-out-of-Pretty-Woman shopping scene.
