In the European Parliament the constituency is represented by Daniel Hannan MEP for South East England, who is a member of the Justice and Policy Affairs Committee and a substitute member of the Budget committee.
Its Chairman is Derek Nicholson, a Maidstone businessman.

Maidstone is a large general hospital that was built under the Conservative Administration in 1983.
Maidstone is well placed to receive trauma rapidly having both good access to the motorways and a helipad.
On behalf of my constituents who live at the other end of the constituency, I am of course delighted that at last, after too many years, we are getting a brand-new hospital.

The constituency is dominated by Luton airport and the Vauxhall car plant, and it came as a major blow to the area when Vauxhall announced that they plan to close their plant by mid 2002 with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
Important towns in the rural South of the constituency are the county town of Dolgellau and the anglicised (and slightly run down) resort of Barmouth.
The constituency is part of the Neath and Port Talbot local authority area, which voted Yes in the 1997 referendum by a majority of 18,267, which was 66% of the vote in that area - the biggest single Yes percentage in Wales.

To bring the electorates of Maidstone and the Weald CC and Tunbridge Wells CC closer to the county average and electoral quota, the Commission also propose to transfer the Tunbridge Wells Borough ward of Hawkhurst and Sandhurst from Maidstone and the Weald CC to Tunbridge Wells CC.
The Commission therefore propose that the Ashford Borough ward of Biddenden is transferred to Maidstone and the Weald CC, the Ashford Borough ward of Downs North is transferred to Canterbury CC, and the Ashford Borough ward of Saxon Shore is transferred to Folkestone and Hythe CC.
One ward of the Borough of Ashford:- Saxon Shore; the District of Shepway.

You have Ashford closer to quota on that basis, you have Maidstone and the Weald closer to quota, and you have Sittingbourne and Sheppey closer to quota.

We want to keep it, because it makes a major economic contribution to Maidstone and because we believe that we, in turn, provide the Army with a very good background against which troops can go abroad satisfied that their families are fully integrated into the local community.
We value such close engagement of Members of Parliament and their local Ministry of Defence interests, whether they are military or civilian, or, indeed, both.

For generations Parliament has been, broadly, a place to which people come from the law, medicine or other professions, but the composition of the House does not reflect the change that has occurred in society.
