Mail transfer agent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mail transfer agent or MTA (also called a mail server, or a mail exchange server in the context of the Domain Name System) is a computer program or software agent that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another.
It receives messages from another MTA (relaying), a mail submission agent (MSA) that itself got the mail from a mail user agent (MUA), or directly from an MUA, thus acting as an MSA itself.
The delivery of email to a user's mailbox typically takes place via a mail delivery agent (MDA); many MTAs have basic MDA functionality built in, but a dedicated MDA like procmail can provide more sophistication.

 Maildir++
As long as the mail delivery agent that puts new messages into a Maildir uses this extension, the quota will be enforced without excessive degradation.
If a maildir goes over quota, and a mail client that does not support this quota extension removes enough mail from the maildir, the mail delivery agent will not be immediately informed that the maildir is now under quota.
Messages added to a maildir by a mail user agent that does not understand the quota extension will not be immediately counted towards the overall quota, and may not be counted for an extensive period of time.

 MX Record Explanation
A Mail Delivery Agent (MDA) is the "postal worker" software that looks at the address and either drops it into the local user's mailbox or tosses it back on the "truck" for delivery elsewhere.
In other words, the MDA reads the header and decides whether it needs to be put in a mailbox on its own machine or sent back out over the Internet to a remote machine.
In either case, mail directed to the domain name is redirected to the mail exchange defined in the MX record.

 Mail delivery channels
The delivery agent may be a type of network communication protocol, such as SMTP or UUCP.
In addition to its use for delaying delivery of messages (``Badhost (delay)'') in the default configuration, the Badhost channel may be configured to forward messages to a ``smart'' host if the mail address is truly unknown to the local machine.
The delivery agent may also be selected from a list of known available programs, or you may enter the pathname to a program that you supply.

Procmail as an integrated local mail delivery agent --------------------------------------------------- Completely integrating procmail in the mail delivery means that mail is delivered as normal, unless a.procmailrc file is present in the home directory of the recipient.
The generic way to accomplish this (works with sendmail, smail and any other mail system that uses a local mail delivery program that takes the mail- to-be-delivered on stdin and the recipient(s) on the command line, with or without the "-d" option) is this: Move your current local mail delivery agent (e.g.

maildrop - mail delivery agent with filtering abilities
The system administrator can either replace the existing mail delivery agent with maildrop, or a user may run maildrop through the 'forward to program' mechanism of the existing mail delivery agent.
Delivery mode - this mode is intended to be used when maildrop is used as the default local delivery agent.
The way it's usually done is by the mail transport agent sending the message using a pipe to the local delivery agent - such as maildrop - and adding some additional headers in the process.

The mail.local program is a delivery agent designed to replace the normal delivery agent on many, but not all, versions of Unix.
On systems that support it, the mail.local program's chief advantage over your standard local delivery agent is that it can use LMTP for local delivery.
With LMTP, delivery of a single envelope to multiple recipients is more robust.

This document describes how to install procmail as your local delivery agent for sendmail and use it to filter spam and viruses server-wide (i.e., for all mail accounts) without using.forward files.
Mail that is not destined for delivery on your server (e.g., an entry in your ~/etc/aliases or ~/etc/virtmaps file that bounces the mail to a yahoo.com or hotmail.com account) will not pass through these procmail recipes.

Originally based on the Postfix local(8) delivery agent, this agent looks up recipients with map lookups of their full recipient address, instead of using hard-coded unix password file lookups of the address local part only.
The virtual delivery agent daemon prepends a Delivered-To: message header with the final envelope recipient address, prepends an X-Original-To: header with the recipient address as given to Postfix, and prepends a Return-Path: message header with the envelope sender address.
In all other cases, mail for an existing recipient is deferred and a warning is logged.

Whereas procmail uses its own internal syntax language to parse the parts of the message and then take actions using more built-in syntax, deliver uses simple built-in variables from within a language of your choice to do whatever you like with it.

 Email Program Classifications
While the delivery of messages between machines may seem rather straightforward, the entire process of deciding if a particular MTA can or should accept a message for delivery is quite complicated.
In order for users not running their own MTA to move outbound messages off of their machine and onto a remote machine for delivery, they must use a capacity in the MUA that transfers the message to an MTA they are authorized to use.
However, some MDAs may be used to sort messages before they are read by a user, which is a big help if you receive a lot of email.

All incoming mail is sent to the hub, meaning that no mail is sent directly to a client machine.
Rather than having each client send its mail directly to the outside world, all outgoing mail from clients is sent to the hub, and the hub then forwards that mail to its ultimate destination.
The advantages of the hub approach are that all local delivery is handled by one machine, that no client needs to accept mail for local delivery, and that management is easier with a single spool.

Mail transfer agent - SmartyBrain Encyclopedia and Dictionary
A mail transfer agent or MTA (also called a mail server, or a mail exchange server in the context of the Domain Name System) is a computer program or software agent which transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another.
The MTA works behind the scenes, while the user usually interacts with another program, the mail user agent (MUA), which contacts an MTA for actual delivery of the mail.
The sendmail program, which implements the standard SMTP mail transfer protocol, has become a very widely used MTA.
